Hi folks... as per my other post, I've just bought a 51 plate dosco II 2.5 td5 E...

When I was driving it home i found that when I went to change gear or approached a junction/roundabout (i.e. when i took the foot off the gas) the transfer box was sliding out of Hi (not jumping but more gradually sliding out). I also noticed that the lever was quite stiff although I could select Lo or Hi with a bit of force...

I'm hoping I haven't bought a donkey and its just muck in the mechanism but... I'd like to ask if anyone has experienced the same issue and what are the other potential causes...

Its now back at the place I bought it from and it's getting looked at by the 'gearbox guy' on Monday but I'm concerned that if they fix it, it might just be a temp. fix and a few months down the line it could happen again when they are free from my 'you sold me a piece of cr*p' rights...

I've been searching through the disco section but I can't find anything simillar (doesn't mean it's not there of course)...

Cheers...

It's normally the other way around, you can't get the thing to shift!

Sounds like selector might be loose or other gremlins, you did the right thing chucking it back, those sorts of repairs are very labour-intensive.

Ask them to explain what was wrong, what they have done to rectify it and what parts have been used. You could always ask them to guarantee the work! I assume you brought it from a dealer, was it a cash payment. If brought on finance or with credit card, you may be able to claim any loss back from the finance house....although I am not sure how you would stand in Scotland.

Hope all is mended and you enjoy your Disco, however, there are plenty about, you could walk away from it if not convinced by what they say.

Regards,
Andy

cheers folks... don't have a finance deal as such... i traded my people carrier in for that and a W plate BMW for my wifes 40th b/day... They seem very helpful at the moment but we'll see how it goes

I'm gutted... I have a 200 mile trip to go on tomorrow and I wanted to A) take a dog with me and B) see how the Disco is for comfort, fuel, etc but the wife won't let a dog near her BMW...

Apart from this niggle its a brill car... can hardly hear the engine from the cabin... but I only had it for 20 minutes before I took it back :(

Hi Folks,

Just got an update from the garage... they said it was a seized cable so they are replacing it tomorrow... is this feasible or are they pulling my chain (i've never seen the innards of a disco)...

I guess it would jump out of gear like that if the cable is seized and gear was not fully engaged as such. I have known my tdi not engage properly and fall back into neutral when you try to take up drive with the clutch.
Always cured by engaging high range again, you get used to the feeling of it "going in" if you know what I mean. (applies to many things in life!) lol
Let them fix it and then try it, its sounds reasonable to me- be on the lookout for it when you get it back- play around engaging high and low ect and see if it happens again. Take it back if it dose!

As Tom says, the clevis joints get very tight with corrosion of the Zinc plating and almost impossible to move, so sounds like a good call.

I can never understand why Land Rover didn't at least put some lubricant on those joints on assembly, they never get looked at or oiled on services.
