View Full Version : Operating System
Hi All,
I have re-installed my XP three times and now it is great and I have kept files and folders - however I now have three XP starts appearing when I switch on system!! Can I remove the old one's which are not needed? Any help would be very appreciated as I know others with similar.
Many thanks

Yes.
First of all, go to My Computer.
Click Tools, Folder Options.
Go to the View tab.
Select the "Show Hidden Files and Folders" radio button and click OK.
Now go to your C drive, and make a copy of the file called boot.ini.
Then open the original boot.ini and the text should look like this:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
You can delete anything which is not the default.
(above where it says default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S -
Look under the [operating systems] section and delete any entry which does NOT appear as the default.)
Save and close.
Reboot.
If all goes pear-shaped just delete the modified boot.ini and replace it with the copy you made before making any changes.
Many thanks - that should do it! :)
While the above is true make sure you havent installed XP 3 times which seems to be the case.
BOOT.INI etc will remove the option but not the files.
If you reinstalled it should have overwritten the oriignal i.e LEAVE one menu.,

Thanks - managed to change the text in control panel advanced however although this change is working I am not sure where the boot.ini file is even with hidden on?
Using XP Home - any help again very appreciated!
I would prefer to be able to make a copy etc.
Thanks again :)
It will be in the root of C:\ normally. I assume if you select the other 2 the OS doesnt boot ? If thats the case you just have one installed.
I was thinking in my previous post you may have installed it on different partitions or all kinds of stuff but I wouldnt worry about it as odds are you have one install.
FYI if you go into system (my computer properties) advanced settings and then "startup and recovery" you will get the windows GUI for the menu and that is just using the boot.ini file.. you can select others in there.
If you want the play it safe option just select the main one in there and then set the timer for 0 and you wont even see the menu et voila no changes and bobs your mothers brother..... If you needed to get to the menu again for some reason (such as if you selected the wrong one and it wont boot) just hit F5 or F8 on boot just after Bios and before windows loading and you will get the menu back for reselection.
