I have a 54 plate Freelander TD4 Sport which has 48000 miles on the clock. It's been LR serviced from new and tows a 1450 kg caravan with no worries. Apart from expensive tyres, I'm very pleased with it. I'm considering a remap - mainly to see if I can eliminate that annoying flat spot. I'd appreciate any opinions on the merits/demerits of the exercise and also if anyone can recommend where I can get it done in South Wales. Diolch / Thanks

Have a look at this
http://www.tuning-diesels.com/index2n.htm (http://www.tuning-diesels.com/index2n.htm)

The flat spot might be due to your MAF sensor. When this starts going you will see a noticeable hesitation when setting off. The way to test if it on the way out is to unplug the MAF sensor. You can find this left next to the air filter under the air filter cover. You will notice it from a connector sticking upwards.
If you notice a dramatic improvement then you will either have to replace or clean your MAF. Above link has a MAF compensator for about £50.
It is held in place by 2, 5 point star security torx bolts (which you can get off the internet) and then the sensor can be cleaned or replaced.

Other thing to do is to unplug the EGR valve to the front of the engine. You will see a blue corded pipe, pull that off the EGR and tie it somewhere. It might need a bit of pulling off but don't worry. You should see an improvement in performance also. The purpose of it is to open the EGR to allow exhaust gases into the inlet manifold. Unplugging this stops this happening.

Not to forget to block that pipe off as it is sucking vacuum all the time...

Sorry Willo you are right. I just put a screw in mine and tied it out of the way but makes a duck sound occationally. When I can be bothered I will properly sort out the vac and hopefully get rid of the noise.

Think I brought up this duck sound, many moons ago (back in 2006, see http://www.landrovernet.com/forum/showthread.php?t=75862&highlight=spindown+noise ), at that time none else had heard it but now it seems as more and more people do notice it. There is a way to get rid of the sound I understand, do you know it ??

Yes thanks for the link Willo I think I remember reading it a while ago.
It is something that I shall get around to hopefully when I have a bit of time. To be honest it doesn't bother me that much but it would be nice to get rid of it.

To help hyweln and other like him (just like I was) it is worth doing the MAF test just to see if it is dud. A tuning box/ remap will not resolve the hestitation really because the signal from the MAF can either be too low or too high which reduces performance and/or increases fuel consumption.

I know that I talked to someone before buying the freelander about the turbo lag (which in fact was a MAF problem) and how annoying it was at roundabouts. Forums like this help us all and as long as we can pass on good info we can help others. It didn't put me off buying the Freelander and too be honest getting a new MAF or MAFAM and unplugging the EGR blue pipe and blocking it does really make a difference.
