Hi guys, I am asking this question on the Discovery forum cos my engine came out of a Discovery, I fitted it to a series 3 landrover as a DI non turbo,

Anyway does the 200 use oil, the engine I have had 160.000mls on the clock, if I take off the oil filler cap engine running there is no sign of any back pressure but the engine seems to use oil and has no leaks,

I dont yet know how much its using as I have only done about 500mls in it but its now between the full and the next line down on the stick,

Still getting to grips with this engine,

So if the engine is in good nick how many mls to a pint should I expect.

Nick.

I have a 1991 200 Tdi with 139000 miles. I've had it since 114000 mile, 2 years ago.

I have done the 25000 miles over a 2 year period with I guess 4 oil changes. I don't think I will have put more than a litre in between oil changes so that is 6000 miles on one litre. In my terms they don't use oil.

Used for some towing but mainly running around/15 mile journeys but driven carefully. Slightly better than 30mpg.

Got the 200Di in my 88" 2a. Not using any oil worth mentioning. No idea what the cause could be though.

Simple answer some do some don`t.

We have several vehicles with 200 tdis, the wife`s discovery we bought with 100,000 miles on it, it now has 220,000 miles on it. Local running and A road type driving it has never used a drop of oil, do a 300 mile trip on the motorway at 70 and the level will drop very slightly, interestingly if I disconnect the oil breather system from the air intake and vent it to atmosphere it does not use any on a motorway run.

I have a Range Rover Tdi with 150,000 miles on the engine and that again uses a small amount on motorway running but none with normal driving.

I have a buggy that only goes off road, it spends its life at tickover for hours with brief periods of thrashing and that never needs topping up.

Finally I have a discovery pickup with a 200 tdi mileage around 130,000 that has never needed topping up between oil changes.

Are you running standard gearing in the series, meaning you are cruising at relatively high revs all the time? A worn Turbo is the most common cause of burning oil with these engines, but obviously you are running without this. Do you get blue smoke?

Hi guys, ok it seems they do generally use oil, I need to build up a picture of how mines doing over a few months I suppose early days yet, and interesting to see that disconnecting the breather stops any use Mmmm do the breather systems on these engine cause any probs and is there anything to do to them service wise, its a new type of engine to me and I am still trying to get experience with it,

Guss no it doesn't blow any blue smoke of when driving, although if I just start it and leave it to idle for say 5 mins it will put a small amount of blue smoke when I drive away in it but its gone in no time,

It was a bit high geared but I have just fitted some 3.54-1 diffs and engine revs are well down now.

I don`t think there is any particular problem with the breather system, just keep the filter on the side of the rocker cover clean. In my experience the intake pipes always have a small amount of oil in them that seems to dry up if the breather pipe is disconnected for any period of time.
This is no different to other turbo diesels I have serviced which always seem to have oil in the intake pipes.

I put the usage on the motorway as being down to hot thin oil being sucked into the intake by the high volume of air going into the engine at speed.

If you are not getting blue smoke under normal driving I can`t see that you are consuming excessive amounts of oil. Left to idle a 200Tdi will always clear its bowels when you set off.

Ok thanks Guss, I will just see how it goes over the next few months, its done just over 1000mls now.
