Hi guys
is it safe to use BP ultimate diesel rather than ordenarry diesel as i went to fill up today and i haven't used the petrol station for a wile and they have installed new pumps i didn't realise at the time but wanted to fill up with std diesel put the nosel in the filler hole pulled the trigger then realised that the nosels had been crossed over on the pumps and filled up with ultimate instead of std diesel any ideas.

Its not the same as ordinary diesel (unless they have put the wrong stuff in the pumps) its a better quality diesel and it wont do any harm at all, In fact you may find that you engine runs a little bit better.
The big thing is that is that it will cost you more.
I dont tend to bother using premium diesel in my truck (even though I do use premium petrol in my cars) as I have never been convinced that its much better than the normal stuff, however I am going to do some investigation of this over the next couple of weeks to see if it is.

There was a lot of hype and noise about this when it came out .
Make use of your mistake to let us know if there is anything to it and you get any real world benefits will you, cheers ;)
I personally supplment Standard Diesel with a little Millers and I supposed that was about all the Ultimate was be in ready mix form , despite the marketing.

the amount that you have to use to get the full effects and to be honest ive used it when it was cheaper and i wasn impressed.
its suppoused to have a higher centeenen rating better and cleaner burn giving more power but i wouldnt agree i found it rubbish quite frankly

I use the shell one, 300tdi seems to run better also sounds quieter, took 2-3 fill ups before noticing any difference, plus it does a little more mileage.
I get slightly more miles out of £50 worth of Shell advance than I do with £50 worth of normal diesel.
I must admit i tried the odd tank full before but didn't see any difference until running a few tanks through.

the amount of gain for what you pay is so minamal gain so i dont think that its worth it unless you have pockets lined with gold

Youd probably notice more on a performance diesel like a Big mercedes, Seat Cupra etc but its like filling up a Nova 1.0 with BP ultimate petrol and expecting a difference IMO.

Not sure about the cost/benefit of 'super' deisel. I've read all the blurb about it being cleaner and better for your engine but I've tried the Shell version and found no obvious or direct benefit and I think this is why very few people buy it.
However, I used to fill up my old GPZ900R on BP Ultimate and the difference was amazing. But that's the difference between 91 and 95RON - basically it has a higher calorific value and therefore more energy, hence more power.
Having said all that, I rarely fill up at supermarkets as I do believe that the fuel is better at Shell, BP etc. This is purely based on what I have read in various magazines and newspapers.
This is from 'Honest John' who writes in the Saturday Telegraph.....
Feedback is that BP Ultimate diesel is the best diesel giving smoother running, more power and better economy to justify its higher price. Greenergy City Diesel sold by some supermarkets has the necessary lubricity. Shell Diesel Extra was good but had now been replaced by Shell V-Power diesel, as unwise a piece of branding as Ultimate diesel because it can lead to confusion between petrol and diesel at the pumps.
Shell Optimax 98Ron was the best petrol, giving better performance and economy for most (though not all) cars. This has now been replaced by Shell V-Power 99Ron part bioethanol which is even better. Shell and Texaco petrol traditionally had the best detergent packages, but BP Ultimate petrol now has a good one too, and Esso has also introduced a high detergent petrol. Lack of detergent and a high proportion of short runs from cold is what causes most petrol engine fuel system problems, so if you buy your petrol from a supermarket seek written assurance that it at least meets and preferably far exceeds the British Standard for detergent in petrol.
WARNING (added 2-3-2007)
Information has come in from the BBC (clarified by readers) that a batch of Greenergy 99Ron petrol sold by both Tesco and Morrisons has been destroying the lambda sensors of engines over the previous week to ten days. Many hundreds, if not thousands, have been affected. If you are one, Keep your petrol receipts because you are going to need them to get any repairs to your cars paid for by the supermarkets
