It has a funny looking roof and a funny looking rear door. Is it a Santana or something?

No. I think t was a full tilt pick up but now has a strange aftermarket glassfibre roof fitted. The tail lamps are Rover units I think Santanas had thier own design.

Hmmm... I guess it is fiberglass isn't it? Weird.

Santana's also have rather distinctive bonnets (hoods) on account of a different engine, a 2.6 V6 (I think) German engine wasn't it? anyway the hood is a good six inhes longer.

I heard that the santana 6 cylinder was just an elongated land rover engine with 2 extra pistons.

It has a 1 tonne chassis. If it's a proper 1 tonne LR then it'd be useless on US roads except for short trips. It should have the lower geared 'box. Probably about 50mph revving the tits off it. And you can't fit an overdrive to a 1 tonne 'box.
1 tonnes are identifiable ( amongst other bits and bobs) by the extended dumb-irons, and the gearbox output cover being made of steel, with a protruding bearing carrier.
That's a very weird top. Never seen one like that before.

it might not be a proper 1 ton model but the uprated military 109 that used the same chassis and springs as a 1 ton but kept the more conventional ratios in the transfer box

What is a 1 ton? Is that how much it weighs, or how much it can carry? I thought all rovers were at least a ton..

1 ton refers to the payload it will carry, an increase over the standard 109 which has a 3/4 ton payload, doesnt sound a great deal compared to other vehicles, but it will carry it anywhere, which imposes alot of stresses, hence the beefed up components and lower gearing.
The vehicle pictured might be a British ex-military vehicle that has been exported, the dashboard colour (or is that color!) age and twin underseat tanks would suggest that, although the rest of the outer panels and lights look civilian, it looks like its made from a pile of random bits!

Here is a 79 Santana SWB, the cross on the hood was optional.

It has headlights in the grill? Is that non-standard?
I like the 2 piece rear doors on the santanas.

On Friday I saw what at first I thought to be a G4 110SW which an odd front but it turned out to be an IBEX - a kit car based on Land Rover Running gear.
Here is the Santana website: http://www.ticonsole.nl/santana/ps-10.htm
And here is the Ibex website:http://www.ibex4x4.co.uk/

The lights in the grill were installed by the previous owner, I have replaced the plastic grill with a metal one.

I'm not so sure about that grill, panama. could you not find a late 2a galvanized grill?
I think it'd look better if you got it galvanized.
Doesn't look any worse than a regular plastic series 3 grill though!

Good idea, but there are not many Land Rover parts here in Panama. Do you like this?
