Hi guys 'n gals,

My series 3 petrol started making a nasty noise from underneath today. It sounds like a vibration/grinding from the centre behind the engine. The noise starts at about 5 mph and goes at about 15mph. Once moving, if I stick it in neutral and coast, the noise continues so I'm assuming its not gearbox related. Any Ideas??

Cheers

Andy

Sounds like a clutch (area) issue, is the starter motor disengaging correctly?

I had a spring come out of the clutch plate once, original style pressure plate and clutch disc. Of course it really sounded like a metal spring being wiped around the inside of the bell housing as opposed to a vibration/grinding noise. Though in or out of gear it made the same noise until the spring would finally lose enough momentum to lay back at the bottom of the bell housing until it got bounced back up into the spinning clutch then the whole circus of fun noises would start up again. When I finally did get around to taking it apart, the inside of the bell housing looked like someone had been at it with a hammer.

Jack each corner up in turn and check that its not brake related, then check the transmission brake isn't binding (one corner jacked up and you should be able to turn it okay...don't forget the axle stands!!!)

Check your gearbox by putting the transfer box in neutral. You can then go through the gears with the engine running and the vehicle stationary.

I once had a grinding noise which occurred every time I hit bump in the road (very often!) and that was a bolt out of the crown-wheel in the rear diff. It eventually spat it out of the diff pan...Whoever built the diff didn't bend over the lock tabs.
