Hi all my Disco failed it's mot today on welding and brake line corrosion. While I'm getting on with the welding I would like to order the tools and parts to replace the brake pipes.

Sorry if any of the following questions are stupid but I am just rying to get it clear in my head before I spend the dosh.

I would like to make the pipes myself instead of buying pre bent as I then own more tools :) and I can then do any brake pipes again in the future.

My Disco is a P reg Auto V8 with ABS.

What size pipe and fittings do I need?

I take it I need a flaring tool a pipe bender and pipe cutter, anything else?

After reading some previous threads about replacing pipes I think I will buy a decent flaring tool not the £10 ebay.

I've read that I can get different types of pipe, is the more expensive copper mix just going to last longer? How long would plain copper last?

I'm liking the tip of cutting the pipe at the union then using a socket to undo. Any more tips please.

Many thanks in advance for any help.

Simon.

There are various flares and pipe sizes, so make sure the kit you buy covers the types that you need.

Pipe used to be steel only, then there was the copper/steel Bunzl pipe, now you can buy thick-walled copper, which is easiest of the lot, but will work-harden if bent about too much. Can be annealed though.

you can just bend it by hand and you best bet is to get the old pipe off and go to your local auto suppliers who sell air filters, oils etc and get them to match the unions up off the top of my head i think its 6mm pipe, also befor you cut the pipe get a bar to jam the peddle down with so there is some pressure on it, this will save all the fluid leaking out, a bit will come out but then no more fluid will **** out, then when bleeding just crack bleed nipples off and let it run out!!! good luck, they are pretty easy tbh!!! where abouts are your? phil

Thanks for the help.

I'm really looking to having a go at replacing the pipes. I think I might have trouble getting my sil lpg tanks off though just to make the job that little bit harder.

So metric pipes and fittings then. Will order a metric flaring tools asap. How many and what type of fittings do you have to get if your replacing all pipes?

I live in Halkyn, Northwales.

Many thanks

Hello,
just a thought but make sure you can undo all of your bleed nipples - if one brakes off then you are on for a slightly bigger job! If you can undo them all then make sure that the holes are all nice and clear - clean them out using a drill bit.

There's no dark art to brakes just make sure you are clean, methodical and clean. And did I mention clean? I flush the new system with plenty of fluid, maybe 2lts worth before I'm happy to nip it all off. You can use less but I think for what it does I'd rather make sure.
