Hi all, :Mexicanwa
We are avid campers and have stayed at some pretty amazing camp sites during our travels...
Can anyone share their favorites with us.
My fave (in this country) is in the Elan valley, close to the Strata Florida, a good all round area for driving some lanes,
:cargos:
beautiful scenery, eating drinking and chilling out :beers:
Check it out here... http://www.wyesidecamping.co.uk/page1.htm

Well by eck you've only been on the forum for a bit and already your everywhere!!!
Me, Lisa and Eva (few got them in the right order!!!) went to Robin Hoods Bay (west yorkshire) last year and it was brill! Great scenery, awesome rocks and fossils (couldn't help meself had to go hunting). Although we didn't get to do any lanes there must be hundreds on those york moors! We ended up going to Langdale quest off road centre though, all part of showing Lisa how fun it can be, had a great day playing in the forest would recomend it to anyone!
Would love to go back and cruise the lanes on the moors one day!

Camping in the Isle of Man,Kirk Michael.:)
Having visited this site during our annual pilgrimage to the TT races, we were not expecting total peace and quiet! Having said that, this site is probably one of the most pleasant sites we have ever stayed at. Nestling in the Glen this site is clean, tidy, beautiful and friendly and at only £9 per night for two adults and a car, it is very reasonable. The site is run during the summer by a husband and wife warden team, yet we booked direct with the Commissioners via a very efficient online service during the winter months.
There are all the usual amenities, toilet block, showers, laundry etc and there is also a kitchen and TV room - all of which were immaculately kept. The site has a small shop (although I didn't check out the stock as I went prepared and a mobile take away that served decent "chippy" food that you could eat at the picnic tables along the trickling stream.
Steeped in history, there was once a railway that ran crossways to the site and now provides a great level path for walking or cycling, this enabled us to get to loads of parts of the TT course on our pushbikes with ease. Magnificent.
Play area for the kids, access to the lovely sandy beach (5mins walk) we reckon this is a haven where only the birds will wake you up.
We can't wait to have our family holiday there next year and have already booked for TT.2005.
Pete :)

I would have to go with achmelvich as being a top notch site you can go to in the north west of scotland - have a look!http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/lochinver/achmelvich/
Doesnt allow dogs though but there are a few more campsites further round the coast that do.
Was there myself at the weekend - heres a pic from the beach!

Another cracking campsite is Snowdonia brew pub at Waunfawr north wales.
The campsite occupies 6 acres on the banks of the River Gwyrfai just 4 miles from the foot of Snowdon - the highest mountain in Wales & England.
The toilet block provides free facilities that include hot showers and washbasins with hot & cold water and have facilities for chemical toilets.:)
There is also a steam train that runs through it :)The camp also has its own station!
Also the pub brews it own beer ...
And there is the web address for anyone intrested :)

Our favourite site is Skelwith Fold Ambleside Cumbria even when the site is full (we were there at Easter) red deer stroll around the caravans. Abosolute bliss!!!! you feel one with nature.
However only caravans allowed no tenting field.

You all own 4x4 vehicles with byways around, and you choose to pay for camping between a static plastic matchbox mobile and a Mondeo towing a 'Supreme-bellevue-explorer-devon-creme-IV' cararvan.
You all must be mad, go wild and free, experience a quiet dawn, not the sound of campers farting and swearing at their children!
Mind you, you leave it nice and quiet for me!

Hi cap I could not agree with your comments more. I would say that my wife and I are getting close to being die hard campers. From 2800mts in the summer Alps to -21 degrees C in the winter and we are away most weekends through the year. I just can not stand being in a camp site with all those others around in huge German camper vans with Sat dishes the size of the ones at GCHQ in Cheltenham!
We live in a great world with amazing wild life all around us, so long as we dont make a mess of the places we stay when "wild camping" and make sure we act responsibly! it is great to get close to nature, but look after it!
I think the golded rule of a wild camp is to leave it cleaner than it was when you found it.

I've 'gone all the way' wild camping, but this is not perhaps what you had in mind!
I'm glad Astbury and Mikey are real campers!
I would love to do the Alps, but a return to Morocco beckons first.
As mikey says don't spoil anything! Dig out turf for fires/bbq and replace it, have a fire extinguisher, bag your rubbish and take it home, dig a hole for your own waste. Be sensible and don't cause risk to wild life flaura/fauna.

Almost anywhere along the Mozambique coast north of Xai Xai. That's where my avatar was shot. No malls, no insurance salesmen, no bankers, no rush hour, no queues, no stress, no noise. Just plenty of good cold beer, great fish and seafood, empty white beaches, warm clear water, snorkling, spearfishing, scuba, relaxing etc.
The campsites at Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe/Zambia are great. You often get elephants walking through at night.
Wild camping in the Makgadigadi Pans or Okavango Delta in Botswana. Lots of hyaena, leopard, baboons, antelope, birds etc.
There's nothing like falling asleep to the sounds of the bushveld. The frogs and crickets can be almost deafening, and the happy, contented grunting of hippos in a nearby pool is the most serenely visceral experiences a human can have. It must be a primeval human yearning or something.

Marc,
I know exactly what you're talking about. I'm from South Africa myself and nowhere in Europe can compare with the campsites in the southern part of Africa. I've had some fantastic holidays in Zim, Botswana and Namibië and many more to come. There are not many websites or books that shows the beauty for places like Ethosha pans, Swakobmund and the Okavango Delta. So, all I can say is : before you are to old to drive your Landy : GO AND SEE AFRICA !!!!
Cheers

I just returned last night from a short trip down the south eastern coast of South Africa in what used to be called the Transkei. I'll post some photo's when I get a chance to scan them. What's that awning on the back of the white truck and where do I get one?
My two cents regarding Africa would have to be Mana Pools in Zimbabwe.
or Rio Savane in Mozambique.

Where is Mazvikadei? Have you been to The Lower Zambezi park in Zambia. It's opposite Mana Pools on the Zambian side. I am thinking of going there and was wondering if it's as nice as Mana Pools.

Turn right when you reach Banket as if driving to Kariba. Mazvikadei is then a couple of k's on your left.
The Lower Zambezi Park is very nice. I was up at the Royal Zambezi Lodge for the launch of the BMW X5 a couple of years ago and it's absolutely stunning - better than Rukomechi and has standards similar to Chikwenya or Water Wilderness.

Has anyone stayed at Park Cliffe (http://www.parkcliffe.co.uk/)camp site in Windermere. Beth and I are thinking of going in the summer for a week of two. its nothing more than a piece of cut down groundsheet with eyelets pressed into each corner, 2x poles and guidelines. tied to a small hole in each side of the raingutter and stretched to the roof. when not in use, it is rolled up whilst still tied to roof with poles collapsed inside and secured with a bungee to a hi-lift which is mounted above the rear door.
the blue truck has an army basha bungeed to the roofrack pillars.

I'm very fond of Mrs Cornish's Field, Nr Welcombe on the Cornwall/England border. Its a bit basic (I prefer the term adventurous) an there are a couple of Ish green lanes nearby. Mainly I like it for its peace an tranquility + its near the surf. I haven't yet tried takin the landy right onto the beach yet but preliminary investigation seems good
If you want more details email or pm me coz I wont give her number out to all and sundry on the web
Castlerigg just out side of Keswick. Fantastic site Overlooks Derwent, Keswick and the Catbells Hills amoungst many many others.
Hotel next door allows use of the bar and also allows dawgs in too if well behaved.
As for all you wild campers, I can see the attraction but rather than berate others why not just start your own Wild places thread?
Personally I like both Wild and Caravaning and enjoy both equally as much.:p

I know this months after your post Marc. Really looks great; was this part of the one net one life expedition? Malaria mosquitoes apart what about crocs from the river? Was there no danger of croc attacks?

Yup, it was part of of the expedition. We flew a bunch of journalists in to Tete, and then ferried them to Boroma Mission for a few days, then travelled down the Zambezi to Chupanga with them.
Crocs are a huge issue. As we had to bathe in the river, we had to be very vigilant, and chose particularly shallow spots to go into. The boats engines also scared them away to some extent. On the trip we saw literally thousands of crocs in the river. I only saw one hippo though, and they're the guys I'm most worried about. :D
Fishing was quite frightning, because you can imagine that it is difficult to concentrate on fishing as well as keeping an eye out for crocs.

My personal favourite is Gwern Gof Uchaf near Capel Curig. Over the last few years been staying here with mates on motorbikes. Love it to bits. Dead cheap too. The ground is quite peaty, so it's nice and squidgy under your roll mat.
http://www.tryfanwales.co.uk/
My favourite all time campsite is http://www.gwynant.com/ snowdonia. Shore of a lake (great for swimming in summer) and they actually allow open fires and give you big metal fire pits to have them in as long as you buy the wood from them (there is always some catch isnt there!).
No radios allowed but feel free to play accoustic instruments up untill midnight! :D:D

Been lurking at the thread and having done a lot of lanes i'll start posting them if you don't mine. All i have stayed at during the last year and some are little gems the kind of farmers ones with no website and little advertising
Hafod Dywyll or we call "Kings Road" basic at £2.50 pp per night, open all year small ~ 20 tents, allows fires within stones on ground, loo and a free shower, (bit of a walk). Near Cader Idris @ SH684158 phone 01341 423444. Little gem in a small dryish field near a stream, theres a few lanes in the area and its "On the route" so very handy, including "Kings Road" but thats just for the narrow series:D .

I have just been here Fforest Fields (http://www.fforestfields.co.uk/) just outside Hundred House village. Excellent facilities, lovely area, supplies of milk, bread, orange, butter, yoghurt all readily available in reception. Toilets and showers extremely clean and lots of hot water ready to use. Washing and drying facilities.... sinks for washing up dishes etc. Lots of bins for recycling and all general rubbish........ dogs allowed but must be kept leashed at all times on the site although they do have a penned out area for the dogs to run free in. Open most of the year if you have a caravan all year, unless there is a heavy frost you are welcome in tents too although it is probably best to phone and make sure they haven't had to drain down the facilities. You can stay for as long or short a stay as you like and there is no checking in time or leaving time....... if you choose to stay till 10pm that is not a problem all they ask is that you are quiet. £4 pitch fee then £3 per adult per night.
All in all a rather nice site I thought:)

There is a fantastic site on the way to the South Coast (depending which way you go), north of Bordeax on west coast. Town is called La Tranche Sur Mer, and the site name is Les Rouillères. Not been there for quite a few years, but was always a great place to stay...you could even raid the Mussel Farm on the beach!
Large site, camping on level sand, with shade trees everywhere. The 4 mile long beach is a few yards over the Sand Dunes.
Plenty of facilities etc...
Although it looks as though it's grown up a bit since I was last there!

This weekend I stayed at Ty Esaf near Bala.
The main site at the farm house has plenty of facilities.
However, for me the best place is the field near the river...in bad weather you need a 4x4 to get to it. Pitched the tent 10 yards from a wide shallow stretch of the River Dee. Fall out of bed into one of the best Grayling rivers in the country! The Farm owns fishing rights, so free fishing for Salmon, Trout, Sewin etc...
£5 pppn main site or river field.
Was quiet, and no facilities in the field other than a portaloo, but 3 minute drive to full wash house etc...
Was tranquill and not too busy...loved every minute, and will be heading back as soon as I can!

I think you mean Ty Isaf, been twice in the last month and a few times over the past few years. The forum treasure hunt was from here.
Stayed near the farm and in the field, popular with groups and the like since some campsites have banned large groups now, including 4x4's. The free wood is brill and having a fire makes the evening pleasant, but i would'nt when i've been call it quiet, large groups and noise often go together. Shame about the portaloo it was right mess the last time i went.

1st post under this camping thread.
I love camping and would like to recommend this site in Snowdon, Wales, http://www.gwerngofisaf.co.uk/
£4 a person, working farm. You share the field with sheep and hens alike.
Toilet, shower and also bunk house.
Friendly, no need to book. On the home page, the main photo shows the farm house and Tryfan in the background, a wonderfull mountain to climb\scramble. Search Tryfan, and Adam and Eve :)
Easy access, right off the A5, and a 5min drive to Snowdon car park.
Capel Curig has a tea room which does superb breakfasts!
Betts Y Coed about 15min along the A5, has bank and outdoor shops.
Can't comment on lanes.

get a good fire going and anything will burn
LOL think it was near there that they was a sign on a footpath which just said
" in case of snake bite local hosptial is 1 hour away and emercency number for adder bites is **** ***********"
needles to say just ignored it, then just 20 feet though the gate couple of adult adders sitting in the sun on the path, and they moved fast when we got too near.
you should get a pm regard lanes

Steve
I have used the sight for a couple of times but, the NO DOGS means i cant anymore, last time I went it was without my dogs and the farmers dogs barked all night  the other campsites the other side of capel are more frendly as well as beeing closer to the pub!

Finding a Perfect site for landies, needs to be cheap, basic, allows camp fires, away from the public (noise), lets in big groups, landowner gets on well with campers who drink all night:D
rare things if you know of more let us know.

Three buddies and I are planning on going to Oktoberfest in 2007. We are looking at 9-19 through 9-30. We are planning to fly into AMS and out of ???. We are looking for nightlife so my questions basically are:
I assume Oktoberfest is crazy everyday. Is it important for us to be there on a weekend or would we be better off on a weekday (spending our weekends elsewhere)?
Aside from AMS and MUC, what would be a good city to visit midweek?
We are open to flying or taking the train between cities.
Thanks!
Riverside, South Molton, Devon is nice! Lovely camping spot with lovely facilities....and just happens to be 20 mins from Devon 4x4!
You have the moors to explore, the beaches, barnstaple close by where you can drop of the family wilst ''finding a parking spot'' (Zip down to the garage and go shopping! lol!) You can explain where the winch bumper came from later! lol!:D
Camp site is very good, stayed there a few years ago after we bought our first caravan- they had just opened up then. They had planned fishing lakes and a club house, but the standard is high and a nice river running through.
