Hi,
I am taking a vacation on Kefalonia later this month (Oct 2009) and will have the use of a 4WD vehicle. Any forum members with local knowledge of what not to miss (and where not to go!).
No winch-challenge routes please but I am eager to explore the interior of the island. Thanks.

Nobody had anything to add in the way of advice but, with 80 hits, there's obviously some interest.
I can now report that Kefalonia is a superb place to visit: As long as you have transport and no fear of heights!
The main areas of population are centred around ports so there's a steady flow of ferries in and out all day long and the leisure-craft traffic is pretty brisk even for the end of the season.
The island was shaken by a massive quake in 1953 and the tallest accommodation to be seen there is when the blue-rinse set stop-off for cultural enrichment in their floating hotels on their Mediterranean cruises.
The sea and coves defy description but, for me, the main pull of the island is the spectacular road system traversing the steep and hilly landscape.
Tarmac is used on the primary routes but it's thinly applied and lethal when wet. Off the tarmac, however, is an enthusiastic driver's dream come true.
'Like rally-stages' is the best comparison I can make but I am not into the sideways technique; preferring to plot a slow but controlled course over the very rocky tracks. Unlike Play-Station; there's no reset button here. If you roll, it's a long (and very bumpy) way down to the sea!
At the risk of banishment for life, I am happy to say that my respect for the dinky Suzuki Jimny knows no bounds. Why on earth have I been dragging-around nigh-on two tons of Solihull steel these past years?;)
