Morning all

I'm looking to but a car in the next couple of days, and have found two that I like the look - is there much improvement with a '95 300TDi over an earlier 200TDi?

Thanks,

Simon

mecanicly much the same (both engines good )
interior (i think) is nicer on a 300 model
and most 300 models will have anti roll bars so have slightly better road manners

otherwise not that much to choose between them

I prefer my 300 TDI, nicer to drive with the anti-roll bars but the 200 TDI is better on fuel without the cat so not that much difference other than the 300 will be newer.

Take them both for a test drive & see which one you prefer .ive got a 200 tdi disco & I love it. But my mates have got the 300 tdi which I think are more refined interior wise .I also think the 300 got a better looking front end ( that's why I done the front end conversion on mine):)

also though i do think the gearbox in the 300 tdi is a better box than the 200 gearbox the lt77

As above really. I've found the 300tdi arnt as reliable as the 200tdi due to more electronics and also you read alot of headgaskets going on the 300tdi. As thomo said, take them both out for a spin and see which one you enjoy the most.

As said the later gearbox is better and head problems are often due to the difficult rear bolts not being torqued down properly although I did have a gasket blow to the pushrod holes on the 200 but never a problem on the 300. Two things that did annoy me about the 200 was the crap headlights, really good on the 300 but I believe you can upgrade the 200 to 300 lights and the flimsy alternator belt always seemed to slip or break unless adjusted very carefully, had to carry a spare already fitted behind the main belts, no such probs with the substantial 300 set up.

Look at loads, learn the weaknesses of both and then buy the best condition you can, irrespective of 200 or 300.

Condition is everything at this age.

Good luck

it depends on what you want a disco for i bought my 300 tdi auto and removed the cat and as i use mine as a family car i wanted refinment for the long journeys .
the 300 has better gearboxes anti roll bars and a quiter engine then the 200 but personaly the 200 and 300 can be rot boxes and the chance of finding a good 200 might be slim but genraly if given a choice of the 200 or the 300 i would be picking the 300 tdi any day of the week.

but then again you could suprise everyone and buy a disco v8 gas converted lol

In the end I did buy a V8!

A 1997 auto V8, with everything I could think of included and fully working, 89,000 miles on the clock - amazing condition - and I got it for £1000 which seems a fantastic price!

Will get some photographs when I can, but for now take a look at the ebay description - there are a couple there.

I predict that you will fail the MOT on the rear arches! (Mine did!) It's a very common problem on the Disco 1.

The rot is within 30cm of the lower seatbelt mounting points. Should only cost a couple of hundred to rectify at this early stage.

Other than that, looks like a nice motor. Congrats.

Thanks for the tip - I've got a friend coming over in the next day or so to check that sort of thing out and take care of it!

Looks ok but petrol? I hope you can afford to run it because I wouldn't want to!

I don't do too many miles, mainly just a ten mile round trip to the train station. Although I am driving to a meeting in Slough tomorrow!

I will be thinking about putting an LPG conversion kit on - any ideas how much I could get one for?

Thanks,

Simon

Take your credit card! :D Probably only worthwhile paying out for an LPG conversion if you increase your mileage.
