Hi All
I wonder if you could help me, I seem to remember a few years ago, one of the comics I think it was LRO, did an article on converting your series to power steering system taken off a Defender, it described all parts required, the measurements and how to do it. A scanned or photocopied copy of the article would be nice by email or I'll quite happily send you a stamped addressed envelope.
Any suggestions, help or pictures would be greatfully appreciated, I have a rough idea.
Cheers

What do you need power steering for? It's more fun without it! The only time it's dificult to turn is when you're at a complete stop.

Argh, had a bit of an accident at work 4 years ago, that's why I bought the Disco last year, 'cos I can get in it and it has power steering, but I've got so used to the series over the years I can't bear to be without it so it's gonna have to have power steering. As you say not an issue when you are pottering along but it's getting harder for me to park it now and I'm not having one of those stupid ram set ups and at £600 you must be kidding.
Anyhow Tina my partner said I'd be even more miserable without it so she's gonna have a go at fitting it herself (under my supervision). Not her 1st big job, she's done a poly bush kit and changed the rear springs, it's just another simple nut and bolt job (also my brothers a fitter and puts new engines in lifeboats so he can always help with the tricky bits, if he's got time). I've given up on the local garages as none of them seem to have any pride in their work.
I always maintained our vehicles before the accident and Tina finds it a bit of a struggle sometimes so her car is serviced at the main agent but she does the best she can with both the Landrovers with help from family and friends, but the Disco needs a cam belt and she feels it would be too much for her, it's not the easiest of jobs so I think the local agent will be doing it.

I saw one with a defender/90 steering box and an old rover SD1 power steering pump on, mind you that was a 3.5 V8. But i'm sure you could cobble one on.

Hi Daz
Thats most probably the route I'm going to take, I was thinking power steering pump off a Jag V12, have seen pictures only at present but there is a chap near me breaking one and of course that is a combined resivour and pump unit the same as an SD1. Only concern is, will it be man enough, but the olde Jag is a big heavy car so hopfully it will be.
I'm running a Rover 6 cylinder so will probably make a bracket and mount it above the alternator.
Once she who must be:bowdown: obeyed has finished her decorating she can start on this. :Bigbounce
Chris Perfect did a conversion a few years back , using the steering column and steering box from a Range Rover.
Also, you'll find on the internet that Teri ann has done a conversion using the same components from an International Scout.
Cheers,
Todd.

Cheers Tuko, somebody has already posted the Rangie article in the L/R Defender section, have already looked down the Scout route, parts hard to find in the UK and expensive, so that ruled that out.
Also considered Rover P5 power steering box as easily available locally but didn't think it would last due to the extra stresses and weight involved in steering on a Landrover, pitty nice little unit.
