Bought a new monitor today (got sick of smacking the old CRT one to wake the red gun up!)

New one is working fine but it is a wide screen one and it stretches images sideways and everything goes out of proportion. Is there any way I can correct this? I run XP

cheers, Tim

Tim, couple of things, have you changed the settings to suit that monitor size, if your on 800 x 600 for instance, it will stretch everything... you would need to pick something that caters for the etc width...

Have you updated your monitor settings go to the control panel and click on display, then go to settings, advanced and monitor and see if you can find your new monitor in the list, this will then hopefully give you the options of having the wide screen without stretching...

Hope that gets you going in the right direction

Is it a widescreen monitor rather than a normal square one?

Right lcik on your desktop
Select properties
Click the Settings Tab

Then use the slider to choose various resoloutions, Start with 1024x768, click apply and it should give you 15 seconds to choose whether this is correct or not, keep fidling till you find the right setting for you. If you choose a setting that can't be displayed by your monitior, windows will time out after 15 seconds and return to the last working setting,.

You can't screw it up ;)

Widescreen (16:10) resolutions are: 1440x900, 1680x1050, 1920x1200, 2560x1600. Your graphics card will need to support one of these, its also a good idea to make sure you have an up to date driver (download from graphics card vendor website).

Thanks for that and for all replies, as I feared my old computer does not have those settings for a wide screen aspect ratio. I suppose that is the problem with upgrading your computer system in bits!

Makes women look cuddly though:D

start > control panel > system > device manager > display adaptors.

Then Google for driver downloads for that make, or go to the maker's website and download from there.

at the age of your system look for a lower res. 1280 * 768 / 720 or similar might work.

Thanks Bernie for the links and thanks for all advice. Now running at 1280 * 768 and the ratios now look normal. Quality of small text ain't great but like I said it is an old computer so I'm probably expecting too much of it.

Picture quality is good though:) but women now looking too thin again:D

I have acquired another computer today (for free:)) that has an Intel 8284G graphics card fitted. Is this a better card than my current S3 Graphics Pro Savage and would it be a good idea to swap the cards over and use the Intel card on my new flatscreen monitor? It certainly seems to have loads of resolution settings to choose from. Is it just a straight swop? I really do hate mucking about in a computers innards for fear of doing something silly and ending up with no computer:o

Do you mean an intel 82845g Tim? i can't find a 8284g online. If it is the 82845g, unfortunately you won't be able to swap them as the 82845g is integrated into the motherboard and not a seperate removable card.
