Tonight started having starting probs. Something to do with the barrel I think - the dash lights come on but then there is a quiet dunk sound and nothing at all else happens. Like when you havent got the gearbox in N or P (its an auto V8i 1997) Keep pulling key out/turning it back and forth and eventually when a connection is made its no prob at all. Did notice that interior light goes out quickly then is a prob to start... if interior light stays on for a bit then dims as it normally does starting no probs.

When I took her to garage yesterday they steam washed the engine - can I blame them :D

It does sound like you have either a faulty ignition switch or water in the electrics, possible a bad earth that has been aggravated by the wet treatment.

The ignition switch failure is a fairly well-known problem, and could be coincidental with the steam cleaning ;)

Thanks Peter. I take it when you say ignition switch that that is the barrel the key goes into? (You are talking to blonde female here :) ) Its quite stiff to put key in and out of but turns without any problem....

I think if you go down the first page of threads in the Discovery section of this forum, you'll find another member with a switch problem.
