Have the chance to buy above vehicle really cheap. One owner, only 60,000 miles.
Vehicle has intermittant running problem. Can be bad to start and wont run at all. Smoking from rear. Then will start perfectly and run fine next time tried. Has stood for a couple of months. recently been serviced. EGR Valve cleaned and did make a difference. Also gearbox noisey.
Any common problems on these vehicles?

ey up, we've run a '98 XEDI for years, the engine is coming up to 200K now, so pretty good from that point of view.
It'll suffer from all the usual freelander problems though, rather than anything specific to that model/engine -
Sun roof won't work. (Betcha!)
Make sure it is 4 wheel drive and previous owner hasn't just dropped the prop. to get around the problem of a damaged viscous coupling and/or IRD.
Rear diff mounts may be cracked/on their way out (20 or 30 quid parts and not a bad DIY job).
It will probably have atleast 1 minor oil leak in the sump area.... unless it's been really well looked after.
Check the engine mounts for serious play... if the bottom tie bar fails completely it can rip the front CV joint on the prop shaft to bits... guess how I know that?

IMHO the L-series diesel was a cracking little engine.
Fuel economy is "ok", pretty reliable (touch wood) hold their value ok.....
Cheers, Sam
