View Full Version : TD5 Rear seat problem

Hi everyone, just got my first Discovery this week. It is a 1999 TD5 ES 5 seat in a silver/gold colour and I am very happy with it (upgraded from Freelander).

It has a problem with the split/fold rear seats. The left hand back seat operates fine and the seatback folds down as it should. The problem is the right hand 2/3rds. The seatback doesnt lock into poition when upright meaning I cant have anyone sitting on these seats for safety reasons. I decided to go out and have a look at it today. When folded down and I pull the cord to tilt the whole thing forward the seat base doesnt unlock from its seating position. This means I cannot get near the mechanism to try to fix the problem. Any ideas as to how I can sort this small but annoying problem?

Thanks
Sandy

Sandy:

You could try a trick that works with bonnets also:

When pulling the release, push the back of the seat downwards to relieve the catch of pressure, it may then pop out.

I should be about at some point tomorrow if you want to bring it through.
But give me a call first.

Cheers

How did you get on? My 1/3 seat does the same.

I got it working (sort off), the mechanism is obviosly messed up somewhere inside the seat back. The trick mentioned above worked to release the bench so the whole lot could tip forward (turns out there were some playing cards under the seat base so the locking part was too tight to unhook itself). This allowed me to remove the plastic covers to see what the problem was. I could see that the locking part of the backrest wasn't rotating as it should, I managed to get the seat in the correct position and lock it in place by pushing the mechanism manually with a screwdriver. Unfortunatly I need to do this every time I fold the rear seats (which is never). I will try to fix it properly after the winter and the weather is a bit better.
