My '98 Disco has suddenly started making a worrying noise. upto about 2500 revs, it sound like a drill bit skidding/screeching on a piece of metal, loud enough to get strange looks from people i pass. It still drives ok bar the noise, but something is obviously not right. can anyone shed any light on what it might be.
It has once or twice had the diff gearstick jump out whilst i've been driving along, and does sound form inside like its coming from just beneath the diff stick,
I've had a new clutch and re-conditioned gearbox 4 months ago.

I's first of all verify that there is oil in the gear and transfer boxes, maybe drain both and see what comes out.

Sounds like a bearing or bush running dry, so do the check sooner rather than later.

The boxes are pretty good and should last 100k+ without problem.
