After some research on this forum and other sources I decided to try removing the viscous fan on my Disco 300TDI to see if I could detect any performance improvement. If this was successful I was going to consider installing an electric replacement fan, probably from a Mondeo.
However I've just discovered that it addition to the viscous fan, at the rear of the rad', I have two electric fans fitted at the front of the rad. Can anyone tell me whether this is standard? Do I need three fans to keep the thing cool?

don't no about the fans infront of the rad but if you have got a 32mm open ended spanner you could grind it down to fit in between the 4 small bolts and fan don't forget its left hand thread.

Thanks for the reply Fosters Ice. I've got a viscous fan spanner, so removing it isn't an issue. I'm more interested in whether I actually need a fan at the rear of the radiator as well as the two in front of it.

i wouldn't of thought so as the two in front are pusher fans and the one on the engine is a puller fan unless the p o has refitted the fan on the engine ready for selling the car or if the leccy fans don't work properly.

Elec fans are for air con, dont forget that the viscous is also pulling air through the intercooler?
My mrs's 300 has a Kenlowe on it,it may be saving fuel, giving a quicker warm up etc. but I dont think it goes quite as well at lower speeds

took mine off last year because of cool running, never missed a beat, if you were doing serious work or towing you should consider an electric fan replacement. Dont know what connection the two pushing fans have to the aircon though

The two fans are to cool the AC refrigerant passing through the condenser, which is positioned infront of the radiator, and which returns the refrigerant from a gas into a liquid.
