View Full Version : 4x4 power loophole

Newsreader
3rd Aug 2004, 18:50
In response to hatred from the anti 4x4 lobby, and possible restrictions to be placed on them by the likes of Ken Livingstone, manufacturers would appear to be considering two-wheel drive versions of their most popular models.

Honda is one company that is believed to be planning the introduction of a front-wheel drive version of its popular CR-V model. Amazingly, the car companies say that an off-road vehicle that can no longer go off road will have just as much appeal to buyers, because hardly anyone ever goes off road in them anyway.

IIRC you can buy a 2wd Mazda Tribute (Ford Maverick).

Landrover beat tham all to it in the 50's when they produced the 2wd FUV's for airfield use (IIRC). Personally I think it should be compulsory to prove your intentions of off roading before being allowed to buy a 4x4 and then all the people who buy them as status symbols or posh school busses would be confined to something more appropriate for their status symbol laden little lives. Tat way manufacturers would not be bothering to make 2wd 4x4's. What a stupid concept!!

they wouldn't be 4x4's anymore!, but its a stupid idea anyway, who ever heard of a 2WD 4x4, i bet land rover won't be doing this

What about those vehicles that are switchable?

Series Trucks, Jimnys, Vitaras etc...

What about vehicles that are a 4x4 derivative of another vehicle?

Scenic RX4, Daihatsu YRV, Suzuki Swift 4Grip????

Although any move get Subaru's off the road would get my vote.
(I have a guitar but I'm not Clapton, why do you think your Scooby [vomit] makes you anything like McCrae?)

So would you also want estate car drivers to prove they would fill it up, sports car owners to prove they'll drive to the max, 4 door owner prove they have 4 people to use all the doors and convertable owners prove they live in a sunny area.
I bet most of the members on this site would loose thier Landies if your suggestion came in cos I don't think "I want to drive green lanes at the weekend sir" would be a good enough reason do you?

Why???? Is she planning on having a crash? It is safer to stay at home if you look at the stats.

It's not Landies that are the issue! What is the point of a Range Rover, Cayenne, X5, X3, Toureg, ML, XC90.......? They are never going to go off road *ever*. They are purely a 'look what a big car I've got' vehicle.

No make or model was specified, it was justification for a 4x4!!
That to me means ALL 4x4's, not everything except Land Rovers.
I also see you included Range Rovers in your list, have you never seen a Range Rover off-Road? Plus, a 89-98 Discovery is a Range Rover with a different body so shouldn't these be on your list as well?

I think the orignal post related to people buying new large 4x4 vehicles for the sole purpose of driving on the road. Those vehicles that Ken Livingston is attacking.

Not bad off road, whats this then!! (All credits to 'deano' for the pic)
But couldn't resist, I think there needs no more to be said regarding Range Rovers doing it off road. :buck:

I think that if all new 4x4s came factory fitted with 4 inches of dried mud and generous dollops of cow **** on them as standard, there would be far less seen on the school runs;)

In similar vein, I suggest that single people should be made to drive one-seat cars, couples two seat cars, and families of four should be limited to driving just one vehicle and that with just 4 seats.

Think before posting

si-guru, good wind up m8. i even find that my range rover will drive through the foam in one of those no touch car washes with the diff-lock out!!
£5 for the experience though as opposed to £3-50 for a 2 wheel drive motor.
just wait till friday when it gets its amazons fitted.

I meant a new Range Rover.

Do you know somebody who green lanes in a 04 plate TD6 Vogue?
Do any tyre manufacturers supply M&S tyres in 22" sizes?

...thought not.

My point is all the fuss over 4x4's has some relevence. Is it correct to allow people to use totally inappropriate vehicles without taxing them for it? In somes ways it is anti-social.

What about open fires... same thing back in the 60's...

I don't hear anybody on this forum moaning about how their brand new house doesn't have a coal bunker, or asking how much to build a chimney. We've already changed our perception of that.

Ooops! sorry if I caused any offence last night with my comments, not really an excuse but I was drunk. :BigSorry:
I was just saying that a 4x4 should be just that-4wd. There are plenty of horses for all the other courses.

I note that the article says Honda are planning to introduce a 2WD version of the CRV, but this is what they already have. Isn't it one of those new fangle dangle computer chip controlled super sensory 4x4s that only goes into 4x4 if its needed? Which presumably means that, in the case of a Honda CRV, 99.999999999% of the time its in 2WD mode.

Isn't that the same as a series landie though, they're only in 4wd when the driver chooses to select it... *ducks* ;)
