View Full Version : Oil Leakage...

From how many locations you ask?
ok - there is oil leaking from the sump
and possibly also from the rear main oil seal. The mechanic mentioned not knowing how bad the rear main oil seal is until it's pulled down, is there anything else can go wrong there or is it just 'rear seal replacement needed' but the work is getting to it to see...
Can anyone tell me how severe these are? And what parts I may need? I'm trying to work it out in advance because the warranty only covers me for up to AUD $1000 at a time
Thanks

Hi Michelle how bad is the oil leak?.What i would is get underneath yourself with some rags wipe as much of the sump and bellhousing to clean away the oil go to Bunnings get a fitting for airlines off an air compressor and a piece of clear plastic hose to slip over the end of fitting. Screw the fitting into the bottom of the bellhousing fit the hose over the fitting then bring it up to the top of the motor like a breather and tie it up so it cant drop down.Go for a drive to heat the car up and if you stop now and again lok at the clear hose you will see if the oil is leaking from the main rear seal. If the hose is filling up take the hose off or you will get to much oil on the clutch.I do not know what your mechanical ability is but you can do this quite easily and you will get a lot of satisfaction from trying to problem solve the problem yourself then when you work out where the oil is leaking from you can tell your mechanic how you elimenated where the leak is he may then think your no dummy and will be less likely to be heavy handed with the bill. Hope this is a help to you if you want any help yell out.

well it had been thoroughly cleaned under there at the last service and I was told to bring it back in 1000kms later so they could locate the leaks (too bad bfore, oil just everywhere including my driveway lol)
I don't know if Disco's are as bad as 90's (I doubt it!) but I've just learnt to live with topping up the fluids and keeping a supply of Gunk driveway oil stain remover in the house!
I could spend the rest of my life trying to eliminate leaks!

well if there was a choice of having one OR the other fixed, which would be ideal? Or which one would be the trickiest and most expensive to be fixed, I'd choose it to be done under the warranty and perhaps do the cheaper less worriesome one at a later date with my own cash.

I would get the rear main done first as this could pottentially get to the stage where the clutch becomes contaminated (unless you have an auto!). The job will involve removing the engine or gearbox so it may be worth haveing a new clutch fitted anyway while it is all down. I don't know how the oz dollar is to the £gb but i should imagine that both leaks could be sorted for a grand anyway. If not have them sorted one at a time, making a claim on the warranty for each leak. Dont think there is too much involved in doing the sump (iirc it can be done with the engine in situ anyway so should be fairly cheap)
Let us know how you go on, Rich

so the engine and gearbox would have to be moved to do a clutch later on down the track?
argh, only got limited fundage, having to get together a bond and two weeks rent to get into another house, plus behind on all bills and to top it all off..works slashed overtime (even assuming i was allowed to do it which im not anyway since im on light duties)

Mine leaks, just a little mind, from the sump area and from the bellhousing,
I keep a drip tray underneath the landie to catch any spots of oil, also its a good way to monitor any leaks,
Anyway its not a land rover unless it leaks oil :)

yeah but...it shouldnt have to should it?....
worried about this new driveway, my old one had grass down the middle. The new one is straight concrete...ripe for oiling....bah

Only the engine OR box would have to be removed to change the clutch as such it would be beneficial to have this replaced at the time of the rear main oil seal being replaced as you would only have to have to pay for the clutch parts themselves (the old clutch would have to be removed from the engine to allow access to the oil seal anyway so you would not incurr any extra labour charges to fit the new one instead of the old one). Does that make sense? Seems a tad rambly to me!!
What I am trying to say in a roundabout way is get the warranty people to sort the rear main oil seal and you just pay for the clutch parts (about £90 in UK including new clutch, operating arm and release bearing IIRC)
Hope you get sorted soon.
Rich.
P.S. I put a few slabs down the middle of my drive to catch any "teardrops" from the landies when they decide to have a little cry which they all do from time to time.
