I know its been covered before in here and other places but!!!
I checked my air filter weekend and found mud in the bottom too close for comfort so.......
Has anyone done a good DIY Snorkel on a disco? what are the materials needed and where to get them?
I also know I can get the Mushroom top but can you get the scoop type?

I have seen snorkels made of black plastic drain pipe and a gorgeous one made by AndyD (on this forum) out of stainless 3" dairy pipe (3" is the outside diameter of the pipe and not the bore). I think you can buy the scooped tops from safari but am not 100% and dread to think what it would cost. I think the mushroom tops are about £30 and available from most spares place but again, not 100% sure. I reckon if you are making it yourself you would be best to copy the mantec design and enter the wing at the base of the windscreen, just be careful when you cut the hole as any mistakes here can't be covered up easily.
A 200tdi air filter housing is easier to couple up to I believe. As to the routing of the pipe I have no idea but you will need to make it as free flowing as possible to maintain engine performance.
To be honest I considered making my own but the ease of just buying a safari won out and all the holes cut in the wings etc are covered by the snorkel itself so mistakes will be hidden forever. Still takes a lot of nerve to take the drill and saw to your pride and joy though!
I am sure other people will offer advice aswell.
Good luck with whichever way you decide upon, let us see the result (especially if you DIY) . Will be interesting to see.

I have also thought about a DIY snorkel many times, its only a section of tube extending the air box inlet, how hard could it be?
I was at a 4X4 show the other weekend and found on a stall many sections of rubber tube with corrigated sections and with various bends on the ends. The tube was about 2'' in diameter and many people were looking over them. They did seem the best answer to the question of how to connect up the air box. Once away from there its simple a case of using plumbing waste pipe .
The Mushroom top houseing is available from either Paddock or Craddock for about £25.
I think that the Mantec snorkel would be the best pattern if making your own, if you could get a good look at one and take some measurements it would solve many of the questions.
If either of us solve the problem let it be known. Its not that we are tight, its just a lot of money for a section of tube!
