Hi folks
not been about for a while, the discoveries are doing fine, and have just bought a winch from ebay, described as an x6 but now I am starting to wonder whether it is or not :(
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7914654851
could someone confirm or deny pls
I know its probably not the best deal in the world, but its local so what the hell :)
Just don't wanna end up getting completely ripped off

Not ever having owned a winch or knowing much about the superwinch family I am not sure.
One thing in the advert that strikes me as a little strange is it says its a 12 or 24 volt version. does this mean the seller does not know if its 12 or 24V or is he thinking it is both?
I am sure they are one or the other

what you going to use it for ? full recovery or just pulling the odd tree root about.
a 6000lb winch is on the low side for being able to pull a disco out of the mud. the disco itself weighs about that much, and when stuck in mud, its effective weight will quickly rise up. you need to overcome the weight of the vehicle plus the added weight of it being stuck. I'm not saying that it wont do it, just that it may struggle a fair amount.
As for the winch itself, i dont really know winch versions inside out so cant really tell whether its genuine or not.

Yeah i was a little concerned over its size tbh, tho its hopefully not going to get used every trip, and the way i see it any winch is better than no winch, I was also under the impression that it all comes down to rolling resistance, not the weight of the vehicle, obviously pulling 2tonne of truck out that is stuck up to the axles in clay is gonna be a dead weight, but with a pulley and the wire doubled then the effective pull of the winch is doubled. please correct me if I am wrong(i usually am) but don't correct me too much, cos i just spent £213 proving my abilities to stand corrected :)
the main use for the winch will be for pulling branches, small trees that have fallen into our river etc, and general other uses around the fields. In all seriousness i just can't warrant spending more on something that won't get used daily. I'd rather save the extra money and put it to better use on mods to stop me gettin stuck in the first place :)

i totally agree - i've found it hard to ever justify a winch for the off roading i've done simply becuase i'm normally aorund others who already have one and the pull out / tow out is often reciprocated when they themselves get stuck.
For the uses you have mentioned, i think thats a suitable sized winch for branches etc etc etc. You would effectively double the pull of the winch by using a snatch block to loop the wire a back. Just make sure that all you mounting points etc can handle 12000lbs of pull rather than just 6000lbs if you know what i mean.

decision made.....x6 it is, mainly due to it coming with a disco mounting plate with fairlead and superwinch are only 20mins away, they also confirm it is an x6 and spares are readily available. thanx for the replies, I'll let you know how it turns out.

I've been looking at winches, never used one and came accross this
http://www.bullnet.co.uk/shops/test/2000lb_electric_winch.htm
It's under £100 and pulls 2000lbs.
Is this a complete and utter waste of time and money and give a false sense of security?
I'm not an extreme off roader, bit of fun and green laning.
Any thoughts?

you want about 9000lbs and up if your going to do the job properly

umm prolly a waste of time, tho depends what u want to do with it
9000lbs is big imho, or ideal, but we all haven't got 450-1000quid to spend on summin that u rarely use and with a snatch block the power is almost doubled tho the speed halves, a 6000lb winch will therefore pull 12000lb, almost 5 1/2 tonne, which should be ok for us part timers, buy yourself a decent s/h winch and spend the money saved on some bits to stop u getting stuck in the first place
just my opinion, but its not what u got, its what you do with it that counts :)
quality is better than quantity etc etc etc :)
