Hi all the tacho on my 89 tdi has a mind of its own under power it is only reading 1,500 rpmsteady at what ever speed you are doing over say 30mph .Asi deaccelerate it goes up and works as normal till it reaches 2,500 rpm then as i gain speed it drops to 1,500rpm .It seems to be running ok just wondered if it was something simple or another rebuild on my alternator as the V8 was acting similar when the alternator packed in ,Any ideas Cheers Dave

well the tacho takes its input ffrom the alternator so as the readings you describe are progressive and not fluctuating erratically then you may well be correct to assume an alternator fault.
If it was a tacho fault I would have expected either erratic deflections of the needle or a sluggish response
But it may even be something as simple as a dirty connection on the alternator pickup and the shift of attitude of the vehicle's nose on decceleration makes a good contact for a moment or two and then it returns to the faulty state.
I'd clean up the contact area of the connectors and road test it and see what gives

Dave
When I had the Disco the rev counter wouldnt work at all, The cable was split in two so I scotched it together, If this is no use at least you know which cable to work on.
