Police and safety experts have launched a joint investigation into an horrific accident at Land Rover in Solihull in which a man died. The victim, 55-year-old Michael Parr, of Hinley Green, Wigan, was a contractor working for engineers Haden Dryses Ltd, of Coventry Road, Yardley, in South Works at 8.30am on Monday. He was married with two grown-up children.
The accident happened at the Lode Lane plant while equipment was being installed on the last day of the annual summer shutdown. A spokeswoman for the carmaker said: "The emergency services attended the factory and the incident is now being fully investigated by an inspector from the Health & Safety Executive and the police. Land Rover sends its condolences to the family of the deceased."
The equipment that fell onto Mr Parr is understood to have been a water pump that was being installed in a washing system testing area. A spokeswoman for Haden Dryses Ltd said: "We have no comment to make." A HSE spokeswoman said: "The man was standing next to a fork-lift truck lifting a component when the component fell on him and landed on his head. It is believed he was killed instantly."
The coroner has been informed and an inquest is expected to open next week.
