View Full Version : 300tdi electronic engine management confusion

Im planning to buy a mid 90s 300tdi disco for a daily runabout, eventually for expeditions.

For simplicity and ease of repair, I dont want any electronic engine management so am steering clear of the TD5. But I think I read somewhere that the later 300tdi engine has some sort of electric engine management. Is this true? I want to avoid buying one of these, so how do I know which ones have, and which have not??

cheers

I don't know when it came in but mine is a '95 tdi and is electickery free.

Autobox 300tdis have electronic fuel pump control. Others only have electronic control of the ERG system that is easily disconnected.

cheers for that, whats ERG stand for?

Don't know what ERG is....

But I know what EGR stands for :jester2:

EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation

An Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve reduces the oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) in emissions by recirculating metered amounts of exhaust gas back into the intake of an engine. This lowers the combustion temperature, thus limiting the formation of NOx.

An EGR valve is a solenoid actuated emission control device, which provides a continuously variable flow by moving a tapered pintle within an internal orifice (???). I.e. a tapered pin within a tapered hole.

The vehicles ECU (or ECM) will measure parameters such as load, speed, temperature etc and controls the EGR according – based on the calibration within the vehicles ECU/ECM (i.e. it's main computer) .

I read on here somewhere that the 200TDi was a normal mechanical engine, whereas the 300TDi had an ECU computer. But don't take my word for it, I'm only a newbie ;)

My 97 Defender 300 tdi had an ECU for EGR. The LR workshop manual is for 96-98, so I imagine that's the period when they had them ...

our first disco was a P reg auto and that was a drive by wire with ecu (emc) or so I was told.

My 1999 Defender 300Tdi does not have an EGR system. My mate has disconnected the EGR on his 1996 300Tdi Discovery and has seen an increase in performance.

I was told today that all 300TDI post 95 auto's has EDC (Electronic Diesel Control, I think).

thanks all for the info.

Just registered so I'm keen to bore the tears out of you guys

the mid 90's 300Tdi has EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) but no EDC (Electronic Diesel control). The idea behind the EGR is that a small amount of exhaust gas is recirculated into the inlet and reburnt, I read somewhere that it lowered the temperature of the inlet gas and improved efficiency (thereby reducing nox), however, all it seemed to do on mine was make large amounts of smoke. I disconnected the EGR and all has been well since.

The EDC was originally introduced on the Auto and then on the later models, they produce more power than the non EDC models and can be chipped to produce more power.

I'm sorry Rob but I have a 1999 Defender 300Tdi which I've had from new and it definately does not have an EGR. There is a blank on the manifold where the valve should be!

Different specs for different areas/markets.

Aj,

That will teach me to post while having a couple of beers? I've just read through my, slightly confusing, first post.

I think the EGR was dumped when the EDC was introduced, not sure though. Mines a late 96 and a friends early 97 doesn't have the EGR or the EDC.

Don't worry about it Rob: At least you have the excuse of having consumed some ale. I'm usually talking out of my **** without the help of beer!!

Aj,

I see you're into bikes as well. I'm amazed how many bikers are also into Landies.
