Thousands of motorists were caught up in traffic chaos today on Europe's busiest stretch of motorway.

Tailbacks stretching 20 miles built up on the M25 near London's Heathrow airport, after a section of the motorway undergoing major roadworks was partially closed. An estimated 20,000 vehicles were caught in near-stationary queues on the anti-clockwise carriageway between junction 13 near Heathrow airport and Rickmansworth 20 miles away. Traffic built up after engineers spotted a collapsed drainage chamber in a section of road already coned off for roadworks, closing another lane. The delays spilled over on to the M4 heading into London, compounding the effects of a separate problem on the M3.

AA spokeswoman Rebecca Rees said: "All the work is done but the delays are still there and the advice is to take a different route. That section is used by 250,000 people a day - it's the busiest section of motorway in Europe, it's a very important route, it's the way people go to Heathrow, it's the way people get to the M4 and into London. We are in the school holidays. It could have been worse but many people will have been going to Heathrow and Gatwick."

The biggest carpark in the world strikes again. Should really consider getting a franchise for a burger van on the hard shoulder, at times you've got a captive clientele.

Those roadworks are that bad everyday! A few weeks ago I went down to Heathrow on a Saturday morning, leaving Derby at 8:00am. It took 2 hours to get to the M25/M1 junction then another 2 hours to get round to Heathrow, queuing virtually the whole way. Then the plane was three hours late leaving as the pilots were stuck in traffic on the M25!

That's great. I guess the pilot never has to worry about missing the flight! :D

I must have been lucky on Monday then, left Heathrow at 1pm and arrived in Edinburgh by 8pm... no queues on the M25 or M1, just very busy...

I got stuck in traffic for about an hour the other day in the Series 2a. My left leg hurt REALLY REALLY bad by the time I got where I was going.
