My Disco is due to have a 2" lift, 235/85R16's and a snorkel fitted end of the month. I have spoken to a guy online who advises against this due to overgearing (and loss of power) and increase wear on the transfer parts. He also says the vehicle will experience handling problems.

Anybody here done a 2" lift with 235/85R16's and can tell me what effects it had? I am now having serious doubts.

Well, based on the theory that the disco is virtually the same as a RRC, then the following may be useful as (bar the wheels which won't go on till it's time to get muddy) i've lifted my RRC and i've not noticed anything problematic.

1. Fitting larger diameter tyres will alter your speedo reading, esp if you have something like 205/16's at the mo (29" diameter) to 235/85 16's (32" diameter)

2. The handling depends on your new springs. Are they a straight 2" lift or 2" lift + Heavy duty? With any lift, the Centre of Gravity will be raised and handling is going to be slightly worse on road.

3. Because of the lift, the castor angle on the vehicle will be altered, but i'm under the impression that 2" is the max you can safely go without problems or other mods.

4. Other people do fit castor corrected radius arms etc and propshafts (available from various people including scorpion racing, but that's starting to get expensive - i didn't bother). Using standard radius arms there will be extra stress on the rear chassis bushes (but it's something i'll live with seeing as i only cover 5000 miles p/a and just made sure i put new polybushes on when i started)

5. I assume you will be putting on 2" longer shocks too, but what about your brake lines? They will be close to maximum length during articulation, but brake line extensions are available (again scorpion racing, but u may find some elsewhere and possibly cheaper - shop around)

Having said all that, it's not something that should start ringing alarm bells in your head, just to be aware that to improve off-road ability, there is a small trade in for on-road ability. Mind you, i never go anywhere quickly so have never noticed a problem!!

Hi
I have a 2 inch lift and bigger tyre's on my 94 discovery 3.9 v8.
My conclusion's are as follow's.
I have got old man emu suspension inc steering damper and find no handling problem's at all,in fact i have now removed my rear anti roll bar and still experience no handling problem's, and i tow a caravan as well.

If you can afford what i consider to be the best then i would advise that route as compared to other people i know with different suspension's OME appear's to perform better.
As for tyre's that is a different story.I purchased 235x85x16 bfg mud's.They were only on my car for a weekend as i felt that the car had totally changed it's handling characteristic's and did not feel right. My wife drove it one evening and refused to drive it home.
I then done some homework and spoke to people i know in the trade, and was advised that the correct tyre to use safely on a discovery is 245x75x16.
These i managed to get exchanged for my other'sand i must admit are so good i have got my old car back with no handling problem's at all.
You will also find that larger tyres on a discovery will when off road just catch your rear wheel arch.
As said before me,there alway's has to be a compromise between std road car and adding off road gear.
So to sum up i would alway's advise OME suspension with steering damper and 245x75x16 tyre's. I hope this is of use.

Thanks very much for all the help guys. I think after reading some of the articles that you all mentioned I am rather going to opt for the 245/75R16's. It seems a safer bet.

For information - I am doing a OME 2" lift with heavy duty springs. I have asked for polybushes to be replaced as required (which will be costed seperately). I am getting General Grabber AT2's and a Safarri snorkel with breather kit. All fitted by Brooklyn 4x4 for a total cost of £1200 (can't remember if that includes VAT or not).
