THE motor which spawned the boy racer has been named the greatest car of all time, with the Defender in 5th place.

Volkswagen's Golf GTi topped a poll of experts, while Britain's Austin Allegro was voted top of the flops. The Mark 1 version of the Golf was the world's first hot hatch. Enthusiastic engineers designed the car in their own time, but the company loved it so much they put it into production. The original Golf is the fifth-biggest selling model ever and sparked a legion of imitators. Meanwhile, the Allegro was renowned for terrible styling and awful reliability.
Auto Express say their Dream Team list of cars are those which have changed the world and shaped modern motoring. Editor David Johns said: 'Each one helped invent a new class of car, driving forward our expectations in the process.'
The Golf beat the Mini into second place in the table. Third place went to the Datsun 240Z, which converted Americans to Japanese motoring. The Mazda MX-5 got fourth place. It rekindled Britain's love affair with convertibles. The Land Rover Defender was fifth.
The Morris Ital came second bottom of the poll. Mr Johns said: 'While we have no desire to single out those that missed the mark, even the flops had a massive effect, encouraging new solutions.'
Best-loved cars include the VW Beetle and the Jaguar E-type. Among the most innovative car designs were the Citroen DS and the Jensen Interceptor.
