Hi it's been a while but I have a question my 1993 TDI 200 drop a cylinder then It over reved even with the key removed from the ignition and a huge plum of white smoke emitted from the back, first can anyone tell me 1 if it is the turbo thats blown and if it is repairable, also the heating matrx went at the same time,or is it off to LR grave yard. thanks(anyone want to buy a discovery?) :(

hi

Your engine has consumed its self, using the oil in the sump for fuel, its common on worn out diesels that are breathing heavily and is could “run on”, generally either of 2 things happens when it takes place, the oil runs out and the engine stops, or all the parts in the engine exit by the shortest available route. Turbos can also cause this if the oil seal on the cool inlet side of the bearings leeks, how ever more often than not the oil seal on the hot exhaust side leeks witch just causes smoke and oil use but not “run on”

Basically prepare for a big bill, do you recall how long it ran like that, and the rpm wile doing so? As this will determine potential damage

In the past I have seen lt77/r380 gearbox that have detonated totally, clutch centres riped out, when trying to stall engines that are running on sump oil, and big holes in body work from exiting parts.

It may or may not surprise you that if it ran on proply it would have been doing about 8000-10000rpm and putting out 600+hp

Hi

B4 you get to depressed, I have been known to be incorrect, especially when diagnosing things from afar ;)

If the disco have done ~140000miles +-20k then you have had the life out of the motor

Some things to check:

If there is still oil in the sump shown on the dipstick and you did not stall the motor to stop it—so it stopped its self, then it would not have run on fully, there for it could well be re-coned, witch costs far less than one that’s a total loss.

If there are any holes in the block or parts on the floor then the motor is more than likely a total loss.

A 200tdi out of a disco is the cheapest tdi unit, as generally they are not retro fitted into defenders as the turbo is in a different place and requires the n/s foot well to be modified and exhaust mods.

Thanks I just checked the oil and there is a small amount left and a small amount of coolant, there was no bits when it was recoverd and did stop by it self no forced stall.

I can either help with replacement bits if you're going to fix it, or I'd be interested in buying it as is if the price is right.
