Hi all, As above really,

Ive been reading these forums for a little while and allways fancied a LR! Well now I have two!!
I have just brought a V8i auto :yikes: Disco series 1 on a 97P reg and inherited a 77 R reg 88" series 3.

I have a couple of questions re the Discovery :BigSorry: one of which I know may be a common problem with these.

The discos a peach and i love it but theres a couple of green and amber bulbs in the console switches not coming on when the headlights are on.

I have managed to get the switches out with no trouble but cant seem to find a way into them to change the bulbs.

The second problem is with the difflock!
I have the high and low ratios working no problem, but when i move the transfer selector over to the left it go's in but nothing happens in H or L i.e. drive still feels the same H and L but no difflock feel (whats it surposed to feel like, also theres no dash light!!) Ive seen a couple of articles explaining a way of testing but these involve a jack and a careful right foot! Is there another way to test the difflock?

Any help much appreciated as i'm in love with these motors and want to get the most out of em.

Keep up the good work its a cracking forum!

p.s. Sorry if these questions have been asked before

ok well done on the landy buys, post pics up if you can,

but to help on the difflock problem, i take it you can drive with the difflock in, so do this go offroad and with sombody to pull you out get stuck, then put difflock in and that should tell you if it is working, because 1 back wheel and 1 front wheel will spin instead on just the 1 front or back wheel that would spin with the difflock unlocked, that is if i understand the 4wd system right, a coiler expert will be along soon no dout to help you with anymore details that i haven't covered.

The diff lock sometimes doesn't engage until you have moved forward a little.. also worth checking is the bulb for the difflock light. If the diff lock is engage you will not feel any different, until you have driven around a few corners and caused tranmission wind up, which can break a weak propshaft, so when trying out the difflock, do it on a loose surface.

Maybe, and I am not sure if this works or not, so please someone else either shoot me down or whatever, you could engage the difflock on a tarmac road, drive along striaght, and turn a sharp corner, then stop and put out of gear, and jack up the front of the disco, and see if the wheels start moving as you lift the weight off it as the unwind the transmission. Make sure it's a flat area and you chock the rear wheels.

Yes, that does work AFAIK, but surely that ******s up your transmission.

Also, on our 110 the difflock light doesn't come on until you are in gear (main gearbox).

This is the way you can test the Difflock....I've just done this on my 90 and it does work.

Chock three wheels and take the handbrake off.

Jack up one wheel (the un-choked one) making sure that all the other three wheels are touching the ground.

Engage Difflock by pushing the lever all the way to the left.

Now, by hand and without the engine running try and rotate the jacked up wheel. If it doesn't rotate fully and freely the diff is locked properly.

Hope this helps :)
Cheers
