Does anyone know if Jate Rings are made for a Disco? :confused2
I have put them on my 90 and have had no trouble with them, they are fine. ;)

I thought that jate rings for a coiler were all the same between Defender, Disco, RRC etc.

Have a look at a disco (if you haven't got one, ask someone who does), does it have the holes in the same place on the chassis as a 90/110? If so, then you can fit jate rings...

Yes they fit, I have them. You can even just about get them on with a rebel4x4 steering guard. I got mine from paddocks.

The Jate rings will fit on the chasie, the problem is that the front valance stops them being usable. They need to be longer than the normal ones to clear it.

Or you could just bin the valance and trim the bumper end caps to suit.

Or pock them through the holes in the front valence. With some shackles on they are easy enough to use. The valence bends a little when being towed out of large pieces of very soft wet mud, but springs back easy enough afterwards.

I suppose this will depend on how much off roading or green laning you will want to do because no doubt this (the valence) will greatly reduce your approach angle.
I know when I had the RR I made sure that the dangly bits in front of mine were removed as such... Good luck :)
We make LR parts for ourselves, but have just decided to sell them. If you have difficulty, let me know and we can make them possibly for your vehicles. Take a look at my terrible temporary web site below

I've got jate rings fitted to the rear of mine. Got them from Leejames4x4.co.uk (http://www.leejames4x4.co.uk/shop-front.htm) (via ebay I only paid £12+p&p) ;)
Didn't realise they could be used on the front though!
I haven't got a front valance (don't like snowploughs) so a set may be winging its way onto there :D

On a Series 1 Disco JATE rings will fit to the end of the chassis using the same bolts as the front bumper. Genuine JATE rings might need grinding out a little, especially if a steering guard is fitted and the valance will need triming or removing altogether.
Be advised.....JATE rings are meant for lifting the vehicle, not pulling it and definitely not snatch-loading it. They can and do break if used way outside the design envelope.

Hence the name: JATE = Joint Air Transport Establishment ;)

If the jate rings are not ment for recovery what is the best to fit to the rear of a Disco for recovery with out replacing the rear bumper for a jackable/recovery one?

a while ago there was a piece in LROi about recovery points and a few places make them that can be bolted through the rear bumper beam, both fixed and swivel.
have got these on the shopping list myself ;)

I didn't mean JATE rings were completely unsuitable for recovery, just to bear in mind that's not really what they were designed for. It's like any recovery situation, you sometimes have to adapt/improvise and use whatever's available.
I've seen WMIKs lifted at over 4.5 tonnes so the rings are pretty tough stuff, plus the breaking strain tends to be at least 4x the stated limit so you'd have to be going some to break 'em.
BUT....snatch loading or recovery of a seriously bogged down wagon....might be best attaching somewhere else.

tow ball with pin?
Hi Bernie I have a tow ball with pin but after laning this weekend I have a broken one as the tow bar ploughed the ground a few times  have ordered a new tow bar
The Steering damper met a rock:confused: in a river crossing and had to get a new one of those as well so the next time I think the tow bar is coming off before I go playing
But it was a great day only one thing got stuck it was a Pajero and a defender 90 with v8 pulled it out got it on dvd lol

I had 'Jack-Mates' on the front of my Discovery, they doubled (triipled??) as shackle receptacles, hi-Lift points & front mounted towing point
Bolted to the chassis via x M12 H/T bolts & the lower steering box mount
