Classic RR V8 is up and running again - engine is totally silent once warmed up - luverly purrrrrrrrrrr from it.
but the centre silencer is full of oil and petrol and things and so produces a lot of smoke when running. so, i take the middle selencer off to see what state its in.... - not too bad but i can see oil weeping from it.
i then leave having put the battery on charge with a view to coming back later....
i come back later, with the wife . . .battery now charged . . . it was too good to resist . . . i had to turn the key on the engine when only the down pipes were attached and the exhaust effectively finished beside the gearbox.
i warned the wife that " this might be loud " ..... "OK" she says as she goes back to reading her magazine in the car......
phut phut BANG BBBUUUUURRRRRRRRRRRRRR
missus yelped and looked at me in alarm and a face like :yikes:
i looked back with a face like: :smart:
whilst not recommended that you try that sort of thing at 6am on a sunday morning, i have to say it just sounded absolutely fantastic....
so without a doubt, that silencer is not getting replaced - i'm gonna get a straight pipe made and hopefully the rear silencer will manage the rest.
im such a sad git, i was grinning like a chesire cat the whole way whilst steph was muttering "your soo sad"
i really should try and get a wav file of it :D

Tommy, click to www.v8engines.com and turn yer speakers up!
Fisha, watch you don't fall foul of the law, there appears to be a crackdown on noise nuisance causing vehicles of late, especially those with modified exhausts, which to the letter of the law is an offence.

the RPI weblink sound is quieter / tamer than mine without the exhaust.
i have to move the car this weekend and i wont have a pipe made up by then . . . . so thats gonna be oh-so-loud when i do a hill start with it . . . . i'll have to chap the neighbours doors to warn them - but i'll try and make a recording for you.
I am a little wary about the law and its limits. I am hoping that for general gentle driving its not going to excessive . . . . i want it to be able to hear the V8, but drown out the street. but i do want to hear it when you open up the throttle. The biggest grin factor for me when you plant the throttle is the sound - not the acceleration.
i am taking the old silencer to a local place tomorrow and i'll see if they can con knock something up ( or give me the bits to do so ) for a reasonable amount.
failing that, i'll buy a new silencer - but thats the boring option for me :D

The daftest part is that there's no set dB limit for a vehicle exhaust, except when the vehicle is submitted for a SVA test. In the real world it's subjective, the part of the construction and use act which talks about modifying exhausts explicitly says that it's an offence to modify the exhaust to make it louder than standard, but unless you turn it into one of these 'wet bee being sh*gged up the *****' type noises oft associated with ****roen Saxos, who's going to know?
oh it sounds so sweet, i'm thankin god i spent some of the goverments money on buzz's v8... oh i love gettin paid to study... thanks goverment, i bought meself a v8 for my ... urm.... uhm... studies... :D

Ok, we all agree that straight through pipe on a V8 sound great, but it can cause problems at MOT time.........
How about this for an idea: Fit two pipes, one with full silencing and one straight through. Then get a 3"NB 3-port solenoid valve ..... ****** it! see the picture:

right - its been recorded on the laptop and even includes steph saying a sneaky wee hello which she didn't think would be heard!
it was recorded about a car length's away and the mic turned down and its still clipped the volume limit ( i'll try harder next time eh? )
sorry - but its 500kb - and i haven't got a a conversion program to compress it yet.
see the attachment.....
TO MAKE IT WORK:
save it to your pc
rename it from V8.txt to V8.wav
( its the only way i could get it to attach )

!!!!!!!!!!..........for sale: Series 111 2.25 5BRG unleaded petrol can be heard running. Owner wants to swap it for a V8! Alternatively, Owner would swap complete vehicle with tax and test for running 2-door V8 Range Rover!....
Only Joking. Seriousely though, I reckon the noise is deffinately one of the biggest attractions of the V8, not just its power. Early next year I am planning to join the V8 club with the purchase of a Range Rover (pref 2-door)of some description to go with the Series.
Sounds like a Nascar! :D

Come on Cerberus, come and join the V8 club :)
is a 3.5 ltr v8 a high compression engine or low?
am askin coz for instance the integra is a low compression engine and would take a turbo quite nicely, as opposed to the civic type-r which is a high compression engine and wot like the same amount of BAR in boost as the integra

it would depend on the age of the 3.5.
normally the compression ratio is stamped next to the engine number on the cylinder block between the exhausts of cylinders 1 and 3 ( front passenger side corner )
