Previously on LRE forum...

Crank case compression...getting worse.
Finally engine not starting properly.
So...spare engine (no.2) to go in.
Head off no.1 found head gasket gone between bore no.2 cylinder and exhaust push rod hole.
Proceed with engine change, as clutch no.1 suspect. New clutch bits in stock.
Found..teeth missing/graunched on starter ring no.1 engine.
New clutch bits on.
No.2 engine fitted.
Lack of Clutch Fluid..re-fill reservoir.
Start engine..throttle cable jammed on frayed part!
Get new cable...engine running!
Find clutch fluid level drops...
Find leak in Clutch Master Cylinder...replace same!
Find hole in clutch pipe to Slave Cylinder (the steel pipe!).
On the way to get new pipe....
Engine getting a bit(!) warm..stop and investigate...water running from back of cylinder head...re-fill and get home via getting clutch pipe. Seems to be head gasket.
"Whipped" the head off.
Core plug gone in back of head!...Replaced and re-built engine.
New Clutch pipe fitted and bled!
Engine running again.
Re-torque cylinder head...take out injectors to get at bolts as we don't have Special tool!
Funny noise from engine..sounds like pinking.
Noise proberbly Cam Follower...not critical.

And Now on This Forum...

More Next time!

Actually...
Tuesday. Head off and No.1 engine out.
Wednesday. To Chester on bike. Get Black Hammerite, and brushes, and hand cleaner, etc. Back home. Clean out and paint all accessable bits of chassis from inside, where engine usually is. (get funny comments about "New Engine" from a few "Odd" people(!))
Thursday. Put new clutch disc and cover plate on no.2 engine. Put no.2 engine in. start re-connecting everything.
Friday. Finish connecting engine enough to start. Re-fill clutch MC. Start engine, and stop it pretty fast due to cable(!). While Alex out (with Eric the Red V8) getting new cable, put all the wires back together in the grille (headlights, etc.). Alex returns, fit new cable and start engine. Pretty much OK.

Alex changed Clutch M. Cylinder on Monday.

Clutch pipe diagnosed (I think) Friday.

Core Plug went the following Thursday.
Engine head job and Clutch pipe on same day, and Friday.

A couple of weeks of "FUN"

Still the brake shoes to change (In Stock!), the springs, shocks, etc. could be replaced, and then there are the "proper" sides (with Windows 2001(!)) to fix up, when the new plastic window channel comes! (on Order). Then they can go back on, and Alex will be able to see more clearly when going backwards!;)

How hard was the cross member to fit? Did you do it or get a garage to do it? And did you hand paint or spray underneath? My SIII is going to get polished up before it's sold off.

Cross Member with extensions.
Fitted by Alex...gas welding. (Allowed a bit of shaping).
Not TOO bad to fit...depends on whether the chassis has been patched around the rear spring hangers...if so, then the extensions will have to be modified to fit over the patches. (Could be just as easy to use a "plain" one, without extensions!)

All paint applied by my (fair?) hand! (And SOME went ON the vehicle!! :D )

Hope this helps......
