Work in progress on rebuilding one good SWB SIII from two wrecks. One was essentially complete but the chassis gave way (£125), the other minus engine/box/bonnet/rad panel but complete with O/D! (£250)

Starting with a new chassis and rollcage. Currently the axles/brakes/steering/gearbox/props have all been rebuilt to new condition, anything that could wear was replaced. Everything down to last nut and bolt ("DON'T remove the [phwadoing] synchromesh!), all cleaned/sand/bead blasted and looking good.

Has LWB front brakes and SWB front brakes on rear. Has 90/110 master cyl/servo and will have kunifer pipes and stainless braided hoses. Front prop rubber gaiter fitted to rear also. Swivels converted to grease by drilling and cross-drilling the knigpins to accept a grease nipple allowing direct railko lube. Swivel gaiters. New balljoints/relay, trackrod threads cleaned with tap.

Engine could have done with .040" rebore and U/L head. Instead it had new bearings/rings/seals/gaskets (£80) and was honed/valves reground. It ran before and will run again, long enough to sort the engine change which will be to:

A Rover 800 2 litre petrol (no ptoee diesel Alan!) with 140bhp and 130lbft and should see the right side of 20mpg. Also U/L, revving to 7k, almost waterproof in standard car trim (still ran whilst being steam-cleaned, admittedly only on alternative cyls!), AND requires no maintainance other than fluids/filters. - Efi tunes itself and decent plugs last 100k.

+The car I'm getting on Friday as a donor has a DECENT HEATER, ELECTRIC LEATHER SEATS, CENTRE-LOCKING (in an SIII? oh yeah!), a RADIO and modern indicator stalks that I have a fighting chance of finding at night! The damage? £100, and its taxed, and MOTed!

Back on topic, the truck will also have alpine lights, safari roof, parabolic springs (picked up S/H rears for £60 the pair!), gas shocks, cruise control (funky 70's American retrofit thing!), additional LED rear lighting, Halogen headlamps.... and other stuff I'll remember after I;ve fixed the origionals!

Estimated total cost £3000-3500

Cool!

Cant wait to see the end result!

I'm intrigued by the LED lights - do you mean the 3rd brake light
?

No, all lights.

I'm keeping the origionals and adding a complete set of LED lights, reversing light, indicators, stop/tails.

I've got some lenses from a Triumph Acclaim (FOC of course) that are flat and the right size to stack one on top of the other and fit in the rear quarter windows.

I'm going to glue in loadsa hyper-bright LEDs then just connect the lights to work in parallel with the origionals. Hopefully the flasher unit won't mind too much as the LEDs draw naff all current.

I'll probably also fit stop/tails and indicators at the top of the roof and maybe a 3rd (7th!) brake light at the topof the rear door.

I'd orgionally considered replacing the current lights with LED units - nice 15W LEDs as used in the space shuttles, that probably throw out as much light as a sealed-beam headlamp, but as they didn't replay to the 'how much does it cost' question I'm assuming if you need to ask you can't afford it!

I may also stripe the back of the landie with the emergency services tape - a little like:

But in proper reflective stuff and on the back only. It'll be ok so long as I don't roll it and people mistake me for a road sign:D

How much are these LED lights then - I want some :)

:D :D

The little LEDs are between 5p and 10p each and are 5mm in diameter. Amazing LEDs are up to 20p each. Sqaure ones that are easier to stack are also available(5x5mm). Work out how many you need for the lens area you have then add some for glue and wire and solder. If you count labour for soldering the ******s in then estiamte £100 at £1/hr!

I never found out how much the bigguns are.

Thinking more about it I may also fill the current lenses with LEDs, save changing bulbs ever, but would neccessitate the addition of a resistor i nparallel to get the right flash rate. Unless I also take the computerised flasher form the £100 Rover special...

Get yer self a 555 IC from maplin and a capacitor and build your own flasher !

Dont you need a dirty old man and a raincoat?
