Has anyone here been watching the fantastic series on sky one with Ewan Mcgregor and Charlie Boorman?I have been absolutely glued to this every monday.fancy travelling round the world from London to New York via Russia on motorbikes  In this weeks episode they finally got through the Road of bones in Russia which was terrifying.I have found myself wishing i could do it in my old series  I really fancied mongolia and kazakhstan, although i didnt fancy the Gonad stew the locals served up.i cant wait to read the book accompanying the series(hopefully a chrimbo pressie) and roll on next mondays episode. This is a good bridge crossing a river on the road of bones.

Bloody fantastic series. Didn't see the beginning episodes accross europe but managed to catch the last three. I loved the travelling accross Mogolia, a place that only has 80 miles of tarmaked road...bike breaks down in the middle of know where and a load of locals turn up (from where I don't know) and fix the thing!!!!! And what about those cool 6 wheel drive Russian trucks, they're something else :)

Road of bones....6 wheel drive trucks....knocking down the river bank to get a slope for the trucks to get on / off....amazing stuff...rivetted....was the vodka drink before or after the crossings?....tough bunch those Russian truck drivers...

Saw it when I was over in the UK a few weeks ago and though the travel and the places they are riding through are great I do think its a bit wet! I mean two support cars and a doctor!!

I brought the book and read it in a weekend in hope of learning more about the places they visit, Mongolia and Siberia seem to be the only places they dont get hasstle from people who know who they are.

If you remind yourself that they are only actors then its acceptable that they are falling out all the time.

Still I have ordered it on DVD to watch over here.

I've seen a couple of episodes and am gutted that I missed the rest. Luckily, the DVD should be out by Christmas.

I agree there....and the rest of the comforts no doubt...
Thats what I mean about the Russian truck drivers on the episode...jump in the truck alone with the sole intention of getting there whatever the obstacle...
If the going gets tough (and it did), a cup of vodka and plough through it.
We have things very easy in the UK methinks.....

Quite a lot of people go round the world on bikes, including my friend Andy on a KTM Adventure (if you know what that is). There were some real pioneers a few years back. Ted Simon went round the world on a Triumph in the 60's and wrote 'Jupiters Travels'. Chris Scott dirtbiked Africa from the eighties and wrote 'Desert Travels' and now does a lot of 4x4 http://www.adventure-motorcycling.com/ http://www.sahara-overland.com/ belong to him.

http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/index.shtml is the forum for round the world bikers.

If you want a fascinating read of how not to do it try this loon: http://www.coolkarim.freeuk.com/

Heheheh... :D Reminds me of the bridge we all crossed near Kiev in an old Lada Niva (Cossack) Two roughly-squared-off tree trunks, about a foot wide each   I wasn't driving -- I was the one doing my best landing-on-an-aircraft-carrier impression on the other bank  :p

miketilley -- there were no beginning episodes through Europe! :D They covered UK/France/Belguim/Germany in about 5 minutes, before they hooked up with Claudio in the Czech Republic ;)

As for the UAZ/KAMAZ trucks :D I was going to post myself after last week's episode. Did you see them load a Suzuki or whatever in the back and drive it accross? :D :D :D The Wife now wants one of those six-wheelrs for her next motor!

Anybody else think they should have stuck with the IZH (Russian bike) for the rest of the trip over Asia? At least it's repairable on the spot... Makes me think of my Landy :) Yes, it may break down (seems to want to, in fact, the lazy thing), but at least you can get it going again with a lump hammer and some pliers!! :D

Hmm saw it on a buckshee DVD a couple of months ago ;) I'm sure I've seen it advertised on terrestrial TV as being on sale now though.

It is superb, although I thought some of their bike riding skills were a bit dubious at times, still fair play to 'em the did it and the DVD is superb.

I found the series fascinating! Bought the DVD after catching a couple of episodes on Sky, then ended up sitting through the entire series one rainy Saturday.

Considering they are actors and had little experience riding dirt, it was one hell of an acheivement. The one thing that struck me was what a nice bloke Ewan McGregor seemed to be. Really normal friendly guy, not at all affected by the fact that he's so famous.

I also bet KTM were kicking themselves that they didnt provide the bikes - the BMW GS has been in quite a bit of demand since the show!

To be honest I think the KTM Adventure looks a much better bike, and maybe wouldnt have suffered the same problems as the Beemers did, but hey, BMW came up trumps in the end and did their image a huge favour!

The last section on the Road of Bones, crossing the rivers with the Russian truckers, it just showed how easy we have it over here on our safe little Island!
