Owen,
Depends on how long and where you're going to.
In Europe/countries covered by your UK insurance company on a Green Card, you will have to meet UK specs ie MOT/tax and the Greeen Card is only valid 30/60/90 days depending on your insurance company. Outside that you will be looking to getting insurance in the country that you are in along with rest of their rules and regulations. Taking a car into another country will also attract customs duty (up to 400% x the value of your vehicle) if you leave without your vehicle (stolen, wrecked or sold) or some countries will accept a bond (a % of your vehicle's worth) for the duration of your stay (I've put a third down before and got it back after 3 years - no interest!!). You get it back when you leave. For long expeds visiting many countries a Carne de Pasage (Vehicle Passport - V Expensive) will be required. Customs stamp in - customs stamp out. If you fail to get a stamp out the company who supplied the CdP will have to pay up and you lose a lot of dosh in the process. Then there's double indemnity and so on so forth.......................
Depends on how long and where you are going!!

How long are you going for and what countries do you want to pass through?
I use Zurich insurance they give me a 4 year policy and green card, that means I have a certificate and green card that is valid for 4 years. over here the MOT or MFK as they call it is required when the car is 5 years old from new, after that you have to re MFK every 3rd year. to be honest I have never been asked to provide any MOT or MFK documents at any boarder from Switzerland to the Ukraine or down to Morocco, dont know about places like China.
I am sure that if the Swiss office of Zurich insurance can give out green cards for 4 years then the English office should be able to do one for at least a year if you push them and point out how they issue them in Switzerland (head office)

If your only going for a year, then your okay as you get a MOT done just before you go.. this would mean that you can get tax etc while your away.
Never been asked for MOT, but was always asked to show insurance and ownership documents. One thing my insurance company did require, was that I had AA 5 star European breakdown cover. They only required this as Romania was on on their standard list of countries.
I am looking at maybe going for well over a year 18months maybe more,
I wanna do loads of countries, europe, affrica etc,
so who do i need to speak to about finding if i do need an english Mot

I read this book and it is a very good one too! though I thought in some areas a little out of date, I found that Tom Sheppard has done another eddition II but every pleace I have tried say its already out of print. Anyone know how I can get a copy?
Also about tax in most EU countries I dont think you need to display any type of tax disk, in Switzerland we dont.

If you are intending to travel Afrika,a Carnet is a must,We can get them from the AA here,i should think the same applies in the UK.
Enen though we dont have an mot here,we have what is called a roadworthy certificate,i have never been asked to show it at any of the borders i have crossed, and that includes just about every country up till Kenya.
Try this place for plenty of info
