I had the same problem after removing the front propshaft that fell apart on the M5 on Christmas eve. :(
Engaging the difflock worked for me, sending all the drive to the rear wheels.
Good Luck! And I hope finding spares is a lot easier for you than it was for me, though I broke down at THE worst time of the year :rolleyes:

Many thanks for the various advice I received whilst broken down and for the email with phone numbers for suppliers.

Not sure how crucial it is to line it back up again the same way. Front uj mounting bolts are in a diamond rather than square formation, had to rock my Disco back and forth to line the bolts up.

You should have drive to rear wheels with the difflock selected, maybe the lever mechanism has seized in the disengaged position. May explain you getting so stuck offroad the other day? Lots of WD40, grease and tapping should free it.

odd!!!!!!
Means nothing! I have never had a diff-lock light that came on! The striker never connectd with the switch in the transfer box!! And shockingly I actually never had diff-lock neither! I got the box re-con'd and the dude who did it did a bodge job and assembled it wrong, to the effect that the lever was prevented from engaging diff-lock!!
Which means that I hadn't had diff-lock ever and OMG how did I not get stuck?? :D :D
We did fail to climb two steep hills though which could be explained by the not having diff lock!!! :eek: One of them was at Driffield and was very steep! :eek:
Anyway, all fixed now, have difflock :) but no light cos the garage just removed the striker plate so freeing up the gearbox! Is nice having diff-lock now!!
Anyway the question;
HAve you ever had diff-lock? has the light ever come on?

yes Geo, used it loads of times
still don't understsnd why the front of the gearbox rotates but the rear wheels dont move
really stuck!!!!!!!!
should get the prop back on tomorrow if my garage has a uj in stock
proberbly will have one!!!!
still does not explain mno power to back wheels
cheers mate

As I understand it (and I could well be wrong :D ) if your centre diff isn't locked the drive is all going to where there is least resistance, ie the front where there is zero resistance! (I think :goofylook:)

Do you know, after all these years I think I am finally starting to understand the science behind all this 4wd malarky ... not bad going for an artsy fartsy like me :p

Easy way to test;
Engine off
put diff-lock on
chock front wheels
Hand brake off
jack up a rear corner (so 1 wheel is off the ground)
turn the wheel, if diff is locked you will only be able to turn the wheel a little bit, basically the transmission slack!
If the wheel keeps turning round and round then diff-lock is NOT engaged!
Do this for both wheels!
Then you will know if the diff is locked!!
As Bernie said if diff-lock is not engaged then the power will be directed to the axle and wheel with the least traction and will spin it!
If the diff-lock is locked then the power is transfered equally to the front and rear axles. So even with a prop shaft missing you will be able to drive in diff-lock because power is being delivered to the other axle!
Cheers

WELL YOU JUST WON@T BELIEVE IT!!!!!!

The fact that there is not a front prop attached shouldn't make any difference at all!
2 Props attached;
diff-Unlocked - power will be transfered to the axle/wheel with the least traction!
Diff-locked - Power will be transfered to both axles equally! then due to the diff in the axle the power will be transferred to the wheel with the least traction - but this shouldn't matter because there is stilld rive to the other axle and wheels!
1 Prop attahced;
Diff-Unlocked - power will be transferred through the gearbox to the output flange that has NO prop shaft on, in effect because there is no propshaft then there is no traction at the axle so the power is diverted to it leaving just the flange spinning!!!. There will be NO power going to the other axle!
Diff-locked - Because there is equal power going to both the axles from the gearbox the axle with the propshaft attached will have power to it, therefore you will have drive - allbeit 2WD!
The point of the diff-lock test is that even with one propshaft missing you can see if diff-lock is working or not because the gearbox is locked!
If I am wrong about this I am sure someone will jump in and correct me! :p
Hope this helps

Don't take this the wrong way but when you put the diff in you are moving the leaver out of high then to the left to engage the diff back is high, forwards is low box.

THANKS YOU ALL !!!!!!!!!!!
As with all things it takes a wise man with a bit of Knowledge to
educate a (not so wise)man,who thinks he is wiser than he is!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All fixed now I think part of the reason the diff lock didnt engage was due to a stuck bearing on the transfer lever.
Yesterday while I was taking off the prop I sprayed wd 40 over the linkage
may be just lossen it enough to fully engage diff lock
WHO knows she works now!!!!!!! YE HA !!!!!!!!!!!
thanks geo mate see you soon AND all who helped as usuall LOL
