View Full Version : Electric Window Problems

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping to get some advice from someone who's had trouble with the Electric Windows on a series 1 Discovery.

My passenger front window decided to go faulty yesterday, it gave no warning of a problem but all of a sudden when I wound the window up there was a big CRRRRRRRRUNNNCH as the window reached the top and something could be heard falling off.

The window itself is intact, but now when the electric window buttons are operated the motor can be heard running but nothing else happens. The window itself is no longer being held in the up position and can slide down whilst the vehicle is in motion and moved up and down by hand.

I've taken the door card off to find out which parts have broken and it seems a semi-circle cog has become dislodged or broken away from it's mounting points and dropped down. It's very awkward to work on the unit because of course it's all behind the door itself and you only have small holes with which to poke your hands through. It's not immediately obvious how this problem can be rectified or whether perhaps a complete new window winder mech assembly is required. Quite how you go about fitting one with such small access holes is a mystery to me!

Here's a pic of the broken part - you can see where it's mounting points were.

Any advice from someone who's had this or a similar problem is appreciated.

HArd luck fella
It looks as tho the spot welds have failed

The spare part includes the motor STC2885/6

THe assmbly does come out through the larger of the three cutouts on the bottom of the door lots of swearing and scratched wrists

THe fixixng bolts and screws are accessible from the front once the trim and plastic sheet are removed

Yeah thanks for the advice, I've already worked out that the entire mechanism is going to have to be removed and a replacement fitted instead.

It's a bit of a fiddly job and since I don't have the spare parts required to hand I've decided to put the job off until we get a spot of fine weather and I've got some time off work.

Obviously it wouldn't do to just leave the vehicle as it is with the window falling down all the time because that would make for very cold and wet journeys and the possibility of theft, so I've cut a piece of wood the right size and wedged it firmly in the mechanism to stop the window coming down.

See http://www.thermalrunaway.co.uk/Images/ProppedWithPieceOfWood.jpg

The job will keep for finer weather now :)

Very clever with the wood! Had the same problem last summer (fortunately) used duct tape looped over the top of the door frame instead. Quite unsightly for sure. Glad you got it worked out. As for the scratched wrists and arms, my neighbor told me, "If you aren't bleeding, then you aren't fixing anything." Good luck!

hi there, I had the same problem with my Disco, the best way i found was to take the top of the door and pull out the window, when i got it all apart then i drilled out the spot welds and rewelded it back together and its been fine since
