Hey all,1997 Disco I 4.0 Automatic here. This should be interesting...
My baby has had this tricky little issue since I got her back in February, and it seems to be getting slightly worse. It seems to run okay at speed, but if I am sitting at Idle and the blower, or the defroster are running, the tachometer suddenly quits working and the engine develops a misfire, backfiring/hesitating/popping. If I turn off the heater or the defrost, and start driving, a few seconds later the tach fires up again and the misfire disappears and she runs relatively well. (until I stop and forget to turn off the heat again!) I think this is an electrical problem, but maybe someone has a better idea. Also, the aftermarket stereo (Clarion) causes a burning plastic type smell when running for an extended period. Related? Who knows. Have changed plugs, wires and fuel filter in hopes of solving the problem to no avail, although, the TLC couldn't hurt. Any fresh ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks. Oh yeah, and the CHECK ENGINE light is on...

Okay, I took it in to the auto parts store and had the alternator tested. It was working fine. Guy there thinks its the coil.. found one for $89. Of course, this was after wasting a bunch of time convincing him that it was not a Toyota Land Cruiser, but a Land Rover Discovery. Seriously. So my question now is... Does a 97 Disco have a single coil (?) or do I need to get the whole coil pack thing? And what exactly is a coil pack? Excuse my ignorance, I'm used to distributors and little tiny Japanese imports...thanks!
