So, I wann try some mild off roading soon, I'd like to invest in some under side protection. I also want to fit something to allow me to get pulled out of mud by someone else when I cock up.....

Whats the best options? For now I'm mostly interested in steering guards

I have seen steering guards with built in recovery points, are they any good? or should I get a guard AND some Jate rings??

Also, in terms of guard what should I go for, I'm looking at cheapness so probably steel over aluminium, what about with holes in it? I've read that holes trap mud but give extra ventilation (not much need for that down here, too bloomin' cold most of the time!). Also I have seen steering guards which are basically a bar that protects the steering stuff rather than the traditional sheet type.

As for getting recovered from behind, is a tow bar bracket adequate?? or do I need extra points back there too?

Blokey chap I know has 2 large staple parts (from a hasp & staple that you use with a padlock) bolted to the front of his 90, plus 2 tow balls, plus a winch an that's just the stuff on the front?

mmmmm, using brittle, unrated staples as tow points is pretty stupid if you ask me

Steering guard with tow points in front and tow bar at rear is fine. Jate rings also good. Advantage with pairs of recovery points is you can rig a bridle between them and spread the load onto both Chassis members and if you know you are likely to get stuck beforehand you can rig the bridle in advance and save having to wallow in the mud

For "Mild" off roading. Just leave it as standard. If you are brave enough to go somwhere where you get stuck, make sure you put the strap around somthing solid like the axle. (Yes, I know you will get muddy! )
Spend your money on tyres instead.:D
