How do all!
Funny this section has just arrived, cos I have been pondering an idea of late!
I have a computer at uni that is my uni workstation and also a personal laptop. Both run on XP and are only a year or so old.
The uni computer is networked already to the uni network via it's inbuilt ethernet port.
What I would like to do is link the 2 comps so I can swop files between them quickly, run both screens (so 2 programs/documents can be viewed/used at the same time) and if possible be able to access the unis internet link too!
Can this be done?
and how?
The laptop does have an IRDa port and WiFi too if this helps! Also what is blue tooth?
Cheers
Geo.

Here is a good link for people that are starting out with networking http://www.practicallynetworked.com
Does your uni have wifi, the other option you have is to stick a extra network card in your uni pc and connect that up to the laptop using a crossover cable or see the uni IT department to see if you can have your laptop added to the domain
ps... there is various ways you can do this best thing to to is speak to the uni IT department

We got a router, after trying to suss out crossover cables and the such like,
Was dead easy to set up,all instructions come with it,cost about 40 tokens for a basic one but the way to go is a wireless set up ,cost about 100 tokens,
Staples office shop is where we got ours from....HTH :)

i tried this with school computers.
best thing to do is to speak to your techie people at uni (especially if the pc belongs to them) and also about internet connection sharing, their network is probably set up so you can't do it without them allowing it.
ps, our stuff is networked at home. 1 adsl modem/router, several network cards, another router (lots of pc's... ) and a few cables. Just about change from £110.

Whatever you do, DON'T rely on the Windows Internet-sharing facility to share a web connection. It is extremely unreliable and although you'll be convinced you've set it up correctly, it most likely won't work. (I spent ages agonising and wasting time over this with two XP-based machines and then found many, many techie forums on the net all saying it's a pile of pap - and for my penn'orth I agree.)
You'll be able to use a crossover cable to get a filesharing network running okay (Uni IT allowing) but use a router if you want to anything that touches the web.
ho hum...

I'm on contract in a Uni at the moment and the advice I would give you is _ DON'T !!
Go talk nicely to the techies and explain what and why you want to do.
The Uni machine will be locked down to a certain extent - tends to be less constrained for staff than students - and the techies will not take kindly to someone effing about with a machine that they are unaware of - and you may even find they have controlled it so that all the work you do changing it suddenly disappears and the machine reverts to the config they have / had decided upon.
What you want is feasible but there are a whole LOAD of other factors come into play and you need their advice.

PS - Michelle's idea is not a bad one. it's simpel and clean and affects nobody else.

Cheers all for your advice and comments. I now understand why the usb hard connection between the two computers worked only once and not again! Will have a nice word with my computer bod upstairs!

Geo,
Be worth letting the rest of the world know how you get on - techies have a relaly hard time trying to control the maniacs who - un-knowingly - trash systems and others could benefit from your experience.
Good luck

I wouldnt use MS Internet connection Sharing.
When both computers are connected to the network you could use a program called VNC wich is freeware and access both computers from each other.
You can download the prog from http://www.download.com/Virtual-Network-Computing/3000-7240_4-10187948.html?tag=lst-0-6
You can use the the program for administrating the computers. To move the files between them you would only have to share the folders you want and just map them and move the files.
