I still use Win 98 on one of my laptops. It is the only OS thats gauranteed to work with all the engine management, datalogging and active differential software that I need to work on the rallycars. Otherwise it's XP pro in all the other machines.

Yep, on the two PCs I've 'handed down' to my kids - one runs ME, the other 95  I doubt either of them have the capacity to 'upgrade'

Well, ME is nackard on my computer! Lucky i have my laptop, i have the sasser worm on my laptop and some how (not even networked) it got onto my computer, but the detector on the internet didn't pick it up! So i've had to format the hard drive! And now it won't work! Great! I'm sick of Windows!

My main pc runs xp pro.
My laptop runs xp pro and mandrake 10.
My webserver runs SMEServer 6.0 (i think)
We have an old pc in the loft that runs Windows 3.11
Any other pc's/laptops kicking around all run xp pro except an old laptop which doesn't ....cos it's in pieces in my drawer.....

Forget ME, it's Bill's worst nightmare.
Run 98 SE, for straight Office jobs 2000 (upgraded), or better XP.

I have had a lot of problems with 95 and ME. put either 98 SE or XP on both are quite reliable. Invest in a good anti-virus program, it will save you a lot of hassel.

Tend to use Win98se quite a bit here as fileserver until I work out how to use samba....
The major problem these days is the large hard drives and the like, where the bios' can't recognise the big ones.
I suppose I could use a drive overlay program... In terms of support I still have installation CDs for Windows: 3.1, 3.11wfw, 95, 95b, 98, 98se & Millenium Edition...
Did Sir have a question?? :D :D

Oh, I've got XP Pro here, which has it's moments... I've also got Mandrake 10 which is what I use for 90% of my web stuff and email. Not to forget the webserver on SME Server 6 which is sitting next to the fridge :)
A lot of my computers have normally been "old" by todays standards, and the only reason my 2.4Ghz PC is now on XP is that it took me ages to get the 80gb USB Hdd working with it :o :(
The "free webserver" option is getting quite popular these days.... ;)

Hmm. Two Linux OS :) It's spreading then James :)
How are you getting on with Mandrake then? Is it what you expected it to be? We've not had much chance to chat over this new build of yours, but you know where I am when you're not buried in homework and landiestuff :)

CLG: You can get good, free anti-virus checkers.
As an example: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
make sure you keep updating the virus signature files of which ever Av you go for! out of date AV protection isn't worth a weasel.
And, networked or not, if you've moved files or floppies or USB devices from one machine to another you can spread viruses (or is that virii?).
We have all of the Windows OS's at work as the software that we write is tested against all versions of Windoze, and out of them all, ME is biggest pile of tripe. If your machine is up to it, try moving to 2000 or Xp, but they need more space on the hard drive and more memory, otherwise your box will run like a pig in the wrong sized boots. I've seen it, and it ain't pretty.
If you've replaced windows you might also need to re-install the drivers for your graphics card, NIC, sound-card, modem etc.
Currently in the house we have a range of OS's from 98 SE through to XP Pro through to Red Hat 9.0.
As an aside: has anyone heard about the Novell Mono project to port and then support the .NET framework to Linux and the Mac? So you can develop on one platform and then with minimal porting run your code on the other two platforms. And, of course, it's free and you can get the source code if you want! Check it out on http://www.mono-project.com/about/index.html
Actually, I'll start a thread about that...
Still running 95 on the laptop, does that count?
Since I never sell my old laptops (mainly because they are worth a fiver by the time I upgrade), I have all sorts of OS's on those things. 3.0(?), 95, 98SE, 2000, NT, XP, XP Pro. Never had 98, 95, ME or CE (except in my dreamcast).

Many moons ago I had problems logging into the Glass site and when checking with their IT guy he did mention that it may have been partly (well, mostly) my fault for trying to log in with IE 3 :o
I had a well tweaked 486 laptop that had all my comms gear on it but shagged battery.
Swapped it back then for £100 and a Tosh 4080 XCDT that had Win2k on it but was corrupted :( Did quite well :) :)

I don't think anyone out there is smart enough to figure out DOS today,... current software has made things too easy.

With extreme fondness... RIP Kermit. :cryeyesou:
I miss DOS and BASIC and ASCII and AX-25 etc. I don't miss 300BPS acoustic modems though. :D
I used to be ridiculed as some kind of wierd anti-social geek 'cos I would spend hours on the computer sending meaningless messages to people around the world. Now, with text SMS it's fashionable, and sexy. Go figure...

I remember we had one at University that was in a wooden case the size of a shoebox, and the large rubber cups looked vaguely like something rude from Japan. Pick up your phone and plunge it in - that's what I call an interface! Mind you, those were the days when you could get an OS on a floppy!

I started out with DOS, then Windows 3.1 ... I liked DOS as it was very transparent (well I thought so anyway), you felt like you were actually operating the machine.
One of the things I don't like about XP, is it assumes I'm an idiot and tries to boil everything down to simple names and stupid pictures - Me (and 95 before it) assumed I had some idea what i was doing, and I could get to stuff a lot quicker that way.

With you all the way on that one Bernie. First thing I do when I have to move to a different PC at work is turn off the hand-holding as much as possible in XP. One personal hate of mine is the way it hides half the Control Panel options until you revert to 'classic view'. And the way that windows explorer hides the files in Windows or Programs Files .. I could go one but I'd better not. I'll only end up on me special medication again.

What was the nickname again for XP? Teletubbies Windows?
(I'm mostly satisfied with it though)
