View Full Version : Oil leaking onto the wheels?
Just wondering where the oil is coming from, at first I thought it was brake fluid because i spotted the tell tale sign of a fluid run down the inside of the wheels/tires on the rear and one front wheel.
But I`ve kept an eye on the fluid level and its not that, so I`am kinda guessing that theres some kind of oil seal bewteen the wheel and the diff housing thing :) see dead technical.
What can I do? Just keep filling up the diffs with oil? Or is it easy enough to change the faulty part.

Sounds like an oil seal I'm sure someone will be along shortly to help. ;)

Possibly swivel housing seal, check condition of crome ball, with steering fully turned left then right, possible chrome pitted, this is only a guess and to be took as that!

Try removing centre cap on wheel sometimes the plastic cap behind over the end of the hub can come off and oil/grease cal leak and get on to the outside of the wheel.
If so fit new cap as the oil can affect the material and it will come off again also clean axle breathers

sorry I cant be more helpfull, but a couple of things spring to mind, brake fluid and clutch fluid feel dry when you rub it between your fingers, oil stays slippery, try that it may confirm if its oil or fluid.. also you may have 2 different faults, hub oil seal on the front and leaking brake fluid at the back ?
I could be wrong, but I dont think a leaking axle seal on the back would produce fluid running down the wheel, the oil in the axle is usally very thick, unless its been in there too long.. The only time I've had this was on my old s3 and that produced a dark stained area around the hub..

Greetings, I had the same problem and what it is is a hub seal, i bet when you stop and after driving and get out you smell burnt oil, and you see oil on the inside of the wheel. its not a hard thing to change. lift the axle off the ground, remove the tire, remove the caliper and tie it up so you dont kink the brake lines, you will see a "star" 5 bolt cap, remove the bolts and the cap. that will allow you to pull the right side of the axel out. change the seals being sure not to slice them when putting the axle stub back in, put it all back together. pretty simple
