Hey Cili, welcome to these forums!! By any chance do you have a range rover? I think I know you by the face.
I'm a member of AWDC as well but don't really afford to compete.......therefore ................I've never done it..........I mean...........yet!!!!
Hope to meet you on this event!!

Yep mate i am...green range rover
will honeslty try to join in but to be frank with you meeting at 730am on a sat after a day of work is a bit too erm how shall i put it..
Plus saturday is the day which i usually dedicate to playing around with my toys.. Actually promised that i will service the woman's Discovery and that was the date i planned to do it...
however if you can please keep me informed and i might try to pop over in the afternoon wherever u might be...and i might drag along some of the guys as well...
ah regarding the affording to compete... hehe u not the only one but depends in what you compete.. i sort of organised a funday on the 2nd of january for all kinds of vehicles i mean standard, modified and hybrids...
Non damaging completely i would say, though i would not attempt them with my range (hey it is small tyres and expensive bodywork and long overhang), apart from one section which i did attempt...
Navexes with AWDC are non damaging if you dont want them to be... I competed in a Lightweight last year and the only damage was to my bottom (bl iskossi) and shoulder muscles with the damned steering. Bqija nothing...
then if you drive like a maniac and end up in a field or somewhere else then it is your problem...

Hi Cili... I do remember seeing a CIL 111 (I believe it was a rangy) on the road it must be you.
I'd love to take part in the competitions. I think my problem is not really knowing if I'm up to it! I guess I'm gaining experience in offroading but still not enough to do it in a competitive context I think.
I'm also still trying to learn exactly how my vehicle works internally (such that if it breaks at least I can fix it myself instead of paying through the nose for it to get fixed). That means buying spare transfer cases, differentials etc and dismantling them and rebuilding them, then hopefully swapping them with the ones currently on my vehicle!
I'm sure eventually I'll get into the competitive scene... just a bit more practice and technical experience and I'll be there :D

I've only been offroading around... umm... 7 months now so I'm still kinda a newbie but I always have a blast whenever Daniel (dborg01) organises something and the only damage I've ever suffered till now was a puncture.
About the spare thingies. I'm doing it because I love learning how that big heavy box works and it also helps IF I damage them. It's a hobby more than anything and gives me something to do on those boring Sunday afternoons. Also, when I bought my landy the gearbox needed to be rebuilt (jumping out of gears, grinding like there's no tomorrow etc) and now I'm thinking the transfer case and diffs might not be too far behind! I've got a general excessive free play in the drivetrain (the type that makes driving at slow speeds in 1st low very hard without lurching back and forth like crazy, and a huge loud clunk plus more lurching if I take my foot off the throttle quickly), a clunk when changing gear and taking up drive (mainshaft or input gear going bye bye?), the handbrake is practically non existent and I could do with a nice cross drilled input gear and an upgrade to 1.222 ratio disco 2 q-gears because I feel my 300tdi revs too much even in 5th and 1st gear is practically useless because after 5 metres I'm changing to 2nd. I'm already half way through the transfer case saga (bought the spare one for dirt cheap anyway!). Anyway, conclusion is, I drove other landies and the drivetrain is so much smoother. Since gearbox was rebuilt, the only remaining suspects are the transfer case and diffs. Would also like to stuff an ARB in the rear once I'm at it, giving my a/c compressor-turned-into-air-compressor something to do (once I get round to mounting it). I guess an ARB in the rear would make me fall into the hybrid group right?
As for the wonderful 300tdi engine... I've got absolutely ZERO to complain about.
About competing, yes I've watched some of the organised events of the AWDC. They're huge fun. I'd love to take part and I WILL take part once I feel more confident. Still got that newbie feeling around me :(. Maybe I need an experienced person as my co-driver? Volunteer? :)
Sorry long post... meta niftah halqi ma nieqafx! :D

Mela let me try to answer the majority of your questions...
the hobby thing you got me there... I like it too so there i will shut up :)
free play.. might be the mainshaft though not much of an expert myslef in these things, but then again you said u rebuilt the gearbox hux?? stupid question but did you check propshafts and UJ.. they clunk like crazy when they are busted... I had a clunk on the offroader and when i removed the front prop the thing just basically came off at the splines for me... it was so gone :)
Mela yes with AWDC rules an ARB will set u in the Hybrid Class, which i personally think is the best class of all... that is my personal opinion.
Another piece of advice is that you should progress through the classes. First start of in the standard classes so that you gain more confidence then fit an ARB. I warn you though if you like your land rover with nice and shiny paint hmmm hybrid class is not for you. Ideally you need a roll cage as well in hybrid (though not enforced) as some obstacles are hmmmm let us just say hehe tal biza :) :)
300tdi awesome engine.. i sort of run 2 of them.. my range with a ZF automatic and my girlfriends disco with an R380... like them immensely though not impressed with the consumption of the range (around 22mpg)
imma engine xbin... the best has to be a V8... even the sound makes me go nuts hehe.. disadvantage hmm consumption.. a friend of mine in a navex pumped in around LM 32... and another guy who got mentioned here is sur rovina aka Sir Alan Ruins L arluggar :).. in a gozo navex he had uses LM 50 in one night... V8 are awesome imma they are ******s in consumption when pushed hard..
Re volounteer hehe... I m not that handy with a map... I leave that to my navigator plus I have to prepare myself to compete in the Hybrid Class so i have to start getting used to tough obstacles...PLus i sort of already have my team mate... Actually two hehe.. One is my girlfriend in navexes and for the rest another person..
Re you guys competing don't get discouraged. I have seen the pics on this site and honestly the terrain was quite challenging.. Just get to know your limits. If you are in a competition and think that an obstacle is too difficult just back off. At the end of the day you might need to go to work the next day with the vehicle and anyway you are the guy who pays for the repairs. That said a navex is pretty non damaging.. the only thing is you will definitely get lost.. and that is where mistakes might happen.. Just need to keep your cool..
Another thing is I personally learnt a lot from is marshalling. Especially in events like the NOC and trials. There you see people with a certain amount of experience tackling obstacles. The AWDC always needs marshalls.. If you are attending an event might as well offer to marshall. The good thing is that you know for certain that as a marshall you are in a very good position to watch some action
Anyway my post was long too...good night to all

Gearbox was rebuilt under warranty so not by me. Was too new to landies back then to dare doing it myself anyway, and I wasn't yet bitten by the landrover bug :D. Propshafts are fine. Replaced the rear one recently too. Front one is still from the look and feel of it. It makes a very smalll "click" when I tug at it near the diff but it's not the UJ. Somewhere inside the pinion (bearing?) Might try taking it off though to make sure!
About the ARB, yes it will be a while before I'm ready to splash out the cash for that plus the obligatory heavy duty half shafts so I'll be a standard for now :P
About nice shiny paint. Mine is Epsom green so metallica and quite shiny but well it's seen it's fair share of trees and scratches. When it gets too bad it will get a respray and then I'll start all over again scratching it :D
I've done a mini-navex with the AWDC with Daniel as my map reader. hehe. Was ok but I'm keener to do the trials. Hopefully the club will make some in Spring?
Nice talking to you. Hope to see you on the 29th!

Hi There, another Maltese national, well i have been lurking around this board for a long time and i feel i need to give a bit of contribution with technical matters.
I do not suggest going to a 1.22 TC ratio on a 90 unless you have overland intentions, also if you run big tyres it will bog down. Going up hills will be a gearchange challenge, and fuel economy will go down the drain due to the short trips we have.
Another thing is that you will never break an lt230, trust me, it will take a lot of abuse and power. Its the only component landrover designed to be nearly industructable!
Thats my 02 cents worth

Hi grem. Thanks for the advice. I think it's a little experiment from my part. If I feel it overgeared, I've got 2 options:
1. Put back the 1.4 ratio box (the beauty of having spares)
2. Change diff ratios to 4.1 (custom ring and pinion) - this would be really great because it makes my low range lower (which I'd love) and make my high range slightly higher than with 1.4 ratio transfer case. And I would have the benefit of the quiet gears from the disco 2 in the transfer case(no more whining). Insomma iktar ma nhawwad fil-landy iktar niehu gost :D
I don't have huge tyres... running 31 inches. And I've got a tweaked injection pump (LRE style if you read the article) and turbo. It's been done responsibly and professionally by the way so it's not about to blow up. It doesn't smoke unless I give it "pedal-to-the-metal" at under 1800rpm since it overfuels until the turbo catches up (can be solved by taking the pressure pipe to the injection pump from the inlet manifold instead of from the turbo) and doesn't heat up any more than 1/2 on the gauge. It pulls like a train and kicks me in the back once the turbo spins up. Never felt it overgeared really. Actually it feels like it's too powerful in it's current state for the gearing it's got.
I guess I just have to try it and see!!
Will let you all know how it goes whenever I finish rebuilding the thing. Time is at a premium lately.
Hope to meet you guys at the next AWDC standard trials. I'll take the plunge and give competing a go. Do let me know when the next trial is (lost the awdc calendar somewhere in my jungle room :( )
