Having just recently moved house im now with BT and im a new customer to Broadband with them When they first sent me all the hardware they sent me a Voyager 205 Router. I installed it and it worked well. After a couple of weeks they phoned me up and said they would be sending me out the Voyager 105 modem as i was on the basic 1G download limit per month package and the 205 would eat up my 1G allowance no problem and the 105 is the modem i should have had in the first place. Now ive installed the 105 and its working fine but my question is why would the 205 eat up more of my monthy 1G download allowance as opposed to the 105 ? I thought the amount i downloaded would be dictated by what i downloaded and not by the modem/ Router i had installed ?

PS I Still have the 205 Router and im thinking of re-installing it as it was always online as opposed to the 105 where i have to kind of dial-up....allthough it only take seconds.

Im confused....any help anybody ?

Are you sure your agreement doesn't have a clause that references connection time as well as download volumes? It doesn't really make sense. A faster router will only download things faster, it won't make downloads 'bigger'! Depending on how it was set up it would perhaps use more bandwidth during the download, but for a shorter time. But that shouldn't affect an agreement based on download volumes. Dunno mate - makes no sense to me. (And I work in computers and telecoms!)

Could it be a 'chatty' router, i.e. lots of keepalives or management traffic while switched on? This would add up if it was 'always-on'.

Cheers for the replys.

I contacted BT to ask why i couldnt use the 205 and the reply i got has confused me even more. They basically said that the 205 wouldnt be able to understand or communicate with my Broadband basic package ? Even though he did say that the router is only a way of getting on the internet just like a modem etc.

So i have E mailed them again asking if its OK to use the 205 with my broadband basic package. Im trying the same question from a different angle just incase theres a communication error between humans :D

Sounds like they are narked that they gave you a more expensive router.

Your line from the exchange dictates how much data you can download, not the router.

sound like they dont have a clue what they are talking about. we wre told by our local telecom company when a friend upgraded to 1mb from 512k that the basic modem would not work. so instead of buying thier £200 router we ordered a top of the range wireless router of the net. strange though while waiting for it to arrive the line was upgraded and the modem worked very strange would think that the suport staff were on comission

Ye does sound like more dodgy information from BT.

They phoned me back tonight ! My thats what i call service, either that or they are after something.....Oh hang on they want the 205 router back :D . Sounds like you were bang on Luke.

I did ask why they were sending me E Mails saying that the 205 wouldnt work, there responce was that it would work but they would like the 205 back please thank you very much as soon as possible sir. Sounds like someones getting there asse kicked as they have sent out quite allot to Broadband Basic customers. Tee Hee i like a good balls up.

Im getting a Laptop soon anyhow and im looking to get a wireless modum anyway. Anybody selling a cheap laptop ? lol
