Has anyone heard about the Novell Mono project to port and then support the .NET framework to Linux and the Mac? So you can develop on one platform and then with minimal porting run your code on the other two platforms. And, of course, it's free and you can get the source code if you want! Check it out on http://www.mono-project.com/about/index.html

Will be slapping this on the Red Hat 9.0 box once I've checked that I have enough disk space left. I'd like to get into C# and all that .net stuff (it also supports ADO.net etc) but I can't foece myself to work on Windoze all day and then come home and do it again in my free time.

Very busy at the moment at home and work so I won't get round to this in the next coupls of days, but I'll keep you posted.

Anyone out there already developing with Mono?

I think this is going to be a very interesting development to watch. Novell's interaction with Linux, when it started, took a lot of people by surprise but when you look at where they are going with their own products, and I have LONG been a Novell fan instead of Microsoft, they are focussing on scaleability, open integration and rapid development. And that RAD by making it open source. A clever move and one to make Bill a tad nervous I would have thought.

As to Novell products - NDS still outperforms Active Directory, GroupWise is still superior, both functionality wise, feature wise, and efficiency wise to Outlook.
And the GroupWise engine is VASTLY superior to Outlook's "access" database.

And do Novell come from a part of the world that understands "evangelism" or not??

We watch with interest.

Wow - heavy technical discussion for here folks!!!

ASP.NEt with C# kicks ass. I get to use it at work. Ialways used to be a PHP developer but now only ever use C#. Itwould make it even better if I could run my stuff from an apache server.
