i hate it to the extent i uninstalled it . . . . MSN messenger is getting too big for its boots now - likewise Media Player 10

Its all started to lean towards "suscribe to this , its only £££ " type of stuff. no thanks.

you have to back such a statement with reason...

Well no i dont, i'm an experience computer user and having tried it my opinion is its best avoided.

Its bloated and full of annoying features that sometimes work and somtimes dont!! (like a lot of MS and other beta software), most of which cant be reliably disabled even tho they can be activated by people on the other end - like the "poke" or whatever its called where you make their msn shake and buzz....not exactly great when you are working and someone keeps doing that.

I stand by my origional opinion, bad news!

Well, I'm also very experienced and qualified in IT (BSc. (Honours) Computing) and I think it just great. If you know what the word "beta" stands for, then you know that it's still in testing and you should report any bugs to MS, so they can fix it.
If you don't like the nudge ("poke" as you call it) then there is only one solution : DON'T LOG IN !
B.T.W. you shouldn't mix work and pleasure (MSN) !

TheGurkha

I have to mix work and pleasure, as you put it, I have to use MSN at work to communicate across multiple time zones. We develop software and we are MSDN professional (or whatever they call it this week) subscribers so we get the pre-beta, beta and tested versions of most of what Micrapsoft spew out ahead of general availability, and I wouldn't even contemplate putting anything of their's that is still in beta anywhere near one of my machines. I've been burned to many times. You can't trust their stuff when it's fully released, so I'm not going to put myself at risk by installing one of their 'nearly got it right' versions.

Quoting your bits of paper to me doesnt really prove much, i too have a degree and have been the MD of a successful business which i started for 3 years now....didnt need any paper for that! ;)

Yes, i also know what beta stands for but knowing MS they dont take too much notice of problems til its too late, its also another reason why i dont like it, it has potential security issues which could easily lead to a breach of my systems which i dont want.

As for mixing work and pleasure....well, a lot of my subcontractors i use are on MSN so its a quick and easy way of collaring them when they are working on projects for me, and seeing as i'm the boss no one can really tell me to get on with my work, if i slack its my choice :D:D

Also, have you ever reported anything found in a beta to Microsoft and had them fix it? You'll be the first person I've ever communicated with that has!

LOL - i found this too, I had a problem which i asked them to fix once using their online support system, they responded saying they would look into a solution and let me know. The next day the ticket was closed without explaination and i never herd anything more!! Cheeky gits, ended up sorting it myself.

Microsoft - don't start me. I have to work with Windows all day everyday (I run a team of software developers, UK based and Toronto based) and the majority of the time isn't spent on developing the app or cracking the actual design problem it is wasted battling the OS and trying to make it do what it says it is going to do. Their API's make me spew.

Oh now look, I need one of my special pills.

No I haven't, but I'm not the one complaining. It's just funny that every one has an issue with MS, but it's still the most used operation system and platform. Don't use it, if you don't like it. Let's see how far you get........... On the other side you ask for new and better things, but you are not willing to try them on let MS release a beta ?? sorry, but it doesn't make sense to me.

A successful business at 23 ?? I see another Bill Gates on the way.....

(The only difference is : Bill can spell : "til" in actually spelt "till", "dont" is actually spelt "don't" etc. etc.)

Why on earth not? Can young people not be successful in business?

I know plenty of people of my age (for example a friend of mine is the owner of Serverstrem, Register1 and I-dot...he is 23 and earns over £30K a month.)

I dont claim to be in his league at all (or Bill Gates), but that doesnt mean my business isnt successful, i started mine when i was at college and built it up over the years to what it is now, enough to pay my bills and allow me to do what the hell i like when i like.

On a side note of the spelling, this is an internet forum, not an english exam.

I have, that's why I am complaining!

It's just funny that every one has an issue with MS, but it's still the most used operation system and platform.
Most used on the PC platform, there's another world out there that is not on IBM compatible PCs. The main problem I have with Windows is that it never works the way it is claimed. They never have to get it working either - they release a few patches and then bring out a new version of the OS and we go back to the start of the cycle of problems, patches, new OS etc. If our company managed our software releases like that I'd be dragged out and shot. MS never have to get any of their offerings working while they are still in their supported lifetime. I don't know how they get away with it.

Don't use it, if you don't like it. Let's see how far you get...........
Mac users don't use it, and I don't use it when I don't have to. I have to use it at work, I don't have to use it at home. Consequently my PC is Microsoft free (Red Hat 9.0) and I have no issues with it at all. Open Office from Sun knocks MS Office into a cocked hat, and it is free! And if you want, you get the source code. I interact with Windows users all the time - no problems sharing files etc.

On the other side you ask for new and better things
Can't find that in any of my previous posts, but that would be nice.

but you are not willing to try them on let MS release a beta ??
Don't see that in my previous posts either. Microsoft can release what they want and I'm sure plenty of people will install and run it, but I won't do that on any mission-critical computer that our company uses. Been burned before, badly, by Mr Gates. I'll let others test his software for him, thanks.

sorry, but it doesn't make sense to me.
You said it.

I'm not saying you're not successful, or shouldn't be, hey, I wish I had my own business at 23.

All I'm saying is :

1. You can't spell.

2. You shouldn't criticize MS for releasing beta's.

3. Don't complain about MS and then you take it for granted.

4. Not many people manage to build a successful business, get qualifications (equal to mine) before turning 24. Well done, you should be proud !

1) I can spell...this is the internet, it's a bit like when texting, you tend to abbreviate and rush - i also don't worry about typing errors too much because as has been proven by scientists as long as the first and last letter of the word is correct, the rest can be jumbled or incorrect (to a point) and it is still readable to any literate person, of that language.

2) I dont critisize MS for betas, i'm just stating the problems and that i'd rather not thanks!!

3) Who said i use MS products??? As it happens i do, i use XP Pro and Win 2K PRO, along side my webserver in docklands which is Linux based so i use a mix of the 2....i'm not anti MS at all.

4) Thanks.

lol :D Not worked up at all mate - just responding to your points. All I can say is my many years of bad experiences with MS don't give me the same feeling of support for them that you have.

At least with Land Rovers (and Linux) you can fix them yourself.

Thank you. That's maybe why I'm so obsessed with spelling. I'm South African and my first language is Afrikaans. This makes being in the IT industry twice as hard for me. So I do apologise if I was a bit abrupt.

For all it's worth I think the Nudge and new emoticons are a novel idea, however there is one emoticon which causes MSN to shutdown if I use it,.... Typical microsoft i guess:D

All in all I'd give it 7 out of 10.

Storm, i don't know if i can be ar*ed to tell you the truth, i went through all this before, couldn't get windows messenger and msn messenger to ever work properly when they where both installed on the same computer, so got rid of windows messenger last time. I've had the beta version of MSN and while a novelty, not really something i'm going to miss in the long term, so gonna stick with windows messenger for the short term.

Don't worry I'm getting sick of accidently using this one wink which causes my whole machine to freeze. I might uninstall it later on today as it is getting really frustrating.

I couldn't help smiling when I saw this - 'til' in this instance is a contraction of 'until' so should really be written as 'til.

Till is what a glacier leaves behind, amongst other things.

"til" in actually spelt "till" True enough - but there's something a little more basic than that in the sentence - shouldn't the second word be 'is'!! :)

We all do it though - typing mistakes don't mean you can't spell.

we use Trillian at work from www.ceruleanstudios.com because it handles multiple protocols - Aim, Yahoo, and MSN. I've heard Gaim ( somewhere on sourceforge.net) handles every protocol.

Bhod - your best bet, in my experience is to remove Windows messenger properly using a registry removal line (can give you the info if you want, tis simple) and then install MSN Messenger from the site (NOT beta version tho!)

I might sound like a microsoft salesman, but if you want the best, you better pay up ! .

In that case the just drop MSN messenger and go to Trillian.

Of course, I am running Trillian Pro (Fully Registered etc) and have a few so far minor quirkes. I think its more down to my setup, and that being I keep being "invisible" :(

But I didn't like MSNb7 from what I saw on a mates PC, so didn't even venture to get it onto this network. I think my father is still running MSN 3 :) Does the job for him!

The benefits with Trillian as well is that it can run more than one account.

For example, at the moment this 'ere lappy is logged into my two Yahoo Accounts (Don't ask, I kept loosing access :( ) and my two MSN accounts (one for PC and one for Lappy Pre-Trillian)

I should really get them all changed to the same email address. Some day I'll get around to it :)
