The story to date is getting more interesting, but it does mean that re-opening is likely to take a bit longer than I anticipated.
As I said in a previous post, the land on either side in the TRO'd zone is classed as a SSSI, and damage has been done to this by people ignoring the TRO and driving around the quagmire when it gets really wet. This has caused the involvement of the CPRW (Council for the Protection of Rural Wales), who have the power to 'advise' the Council on exactly how they do the work required to repair the road. For instance, they can dictate how the spoil from any excavations has to be disposed of, and I'm sure most can appreciate the extra machinery that will be required to effect this disposal. Work already done by the Council on drainage ditches has come in for criticism owing to the soil dug up being left on the relevant bank, so you can imagine what will happen at the quagmire!
Work on the repairs has not started, pending a site meeting between the Council and the CPRW, and this is due this weekend. We're hoping that things will be constructive and work can start.
So - hats off to the idiots who have continually made a mockery of the principle of sensible 4x4 driving to date!

I've been told that there's a gathering of vehicles planned for the Ceriog Valley this weekend; if anyone reading this is attending, please stay away from the Wayfarer - you're likely to encounter Council officials, CPRW, and Police up there!

On the subject of the Police, I'm beginning to feel that, since the idiots won't listen to reason, the time has come to send a letter to the Chief Constable requesting direct Police action; but I'm still thinking about that, but I doubt I'll think for much longer!

Thanks for finding this out and for posting the update. If you want to post the relevant addresses etc here I'll glady write to the council, police etc and add my (meagre) weight to the fray.

Cheers. I think I'll try a polite letter to the Police - see if we can get the helicopter involved. I've had enough of these idiots!

No. Keith was one of the first to stop using it. In fact I saw him there at the end of November, just before the TRO was introduced, and he fully supported my decision to contact the Council (as did Dave Superzuki). We all turned round at the quagmire. There does seem to have been a dramatic reduction in people going to this area, and the quagmire is settling down a bit, but the people that do go aren't helping matters. Let's hope there's a good site meeting this weekend!

From the Wrexham web site:

'Wayfarers' Closed to Vehicles

The well-known Wayfarers Track is closed to vehicles between Swch-cae-rhiw, Pentre, Llanarmon DC (grid reference SJ 129355) and the county boundary between Wrexham and Denbighshire at the summit (grid reference SJ 092366). The road is closed until May 2006 or until essential repairs have been completed, whichever is the sooner.

For further details please contact Highways Maintenance Division telephone 01978 291770.

So it's possible it will be closed for over a year!

It is a shame when people have to act like idiots and get us all a bad name.

A small point, but when you mentioned CPRW, did you mean CCW (The Countryside Council for Wales) who are the statutory body for nature conservation in Wales?

I think it is the CPRW (at least that's what the Council said!) rather than the CCW, but, with all these quangos about exercising all sorts of authority that they've granted themselves, who can tell?
The Wayfarer is still closed, at the moment. I believe we're nearly at the end of this episode, and that it will be re-opened fairly soon. I've been assured that I will be informed of the date as soon as repairs are completed, but, as I think that's a polite attempt to stop me badgering them, I'll carry on asking!
As soon as I know something, I'll post it. Then, watch the hordes descend!!
