Hi,

Can anyone tell me where you can enable/disable JavaScript.

I'm using MS Internet Explorer 6 on MS XP Pro.

I've been in Internet Tools and can't see the option anywhere.

Cheers

Just had a look, is that it under Microsoft VM?

Madoobri,

Cheers for that. That's the nearest I could find too. I've already checked the boxes but I still can't do what I wanted so was wondering if there a specific way of doing it.

Hi Steel,

What is it? Where do I get it? What will it do?

All I need to do is ensure that JavaScript is enabled so I can configure my router management tool via my web browser by typing in the IP address which I can't do at the moment.

Hi Adrian, you still not got this sorted yet m8 (the routere i mean??)

As for JS - the settings are as follows:

(in IE)

Tools ---> Internet Options ---> Security (Tab) ---> Custom Level (button)

Its near the bottom of the long list, under "Scripting" Options are Enabled, Disabled and Prompt - make sure its set to enabled.

For a pictoral guide click HERE! (http://gsaauctions.gov/brow_details/IE6instr.htm)

Steel - JS (Javascript) isnt an applet, you're thinking of JAVA which is a completely differnt kettle of fish all together!!!

P.S - Adrian, i presume you keep XP PRO up to date using windows update, if not then do so, intall all of the service packs, critical and security patches and take ya pick on the others if you need/want them.

I have everything installed with the exception of Journal Viewer update for tablet PC's.

Cheers once again Simon for assisting.

Yep, still can't connect to ISP through the router.

I was just starting setting up from scratch again when once again found that I cannot use the management tool unless I'm connected to the net! The user guide stated that the JavaScript had to be enabled which, thanks to you, I now know it already was so the plot thickens.

I'm still waiting for a reply to an e-mail from my ISP with loads of setting questions I've asked them.

I'm setup to automatically look for updates and and have all the service packs (last one No 2 I think). Cheers.

I'll let you know how I get on once I receive the settings.

So much for getting rid of wires: There's double the amount at present!!

Simon,

It's SORTED!!

I'm using it now!!

It was the Encapsulation option 'VC' not 'LLC'. You did state that but somehow it's jumped back accross. Hardly surprising with all the farting around I've been doing.

Cheers for all your help.

Stowing away wires now.

Excellent, glad its all done now m8.

There are a few more things to sort though....security and encryption.

You need to do the following things (these setps involve both router and laptop settings):

1) Change the SSID to something other than default (SSID is the "name" of the WLAN)

2) Enable MAC address lock down, and enter the mac address of your laptop into the router - this restricts access to only you on a basic level.

3) Enable encryption, this will either be the older WEP, or newer WPA - you need to set "keys" for this to work but itll keep your data safe and keep others out too.

Have a lookie @ the manual on the above, and ask if you need any help...i'll be back later.

Simon,

You're a mind reader. I was wondering what was preventing anyone tuning into my router/laptop transmissions so was looking up security in the manual at daft o'clock last night/this morning. I'll be having a go tonight. Cheers for the info and once again, stand by for some more questions and advice.

PS. Mrs AJ now V happy all the cables have disapeared.

Cheers.

Muckin around with the security last night and all was well until I tried to connect earlier this evening.

The connection was asking for a network code. I can't remember doing anything like that!!

Just managed to disable the security about half an hour ago and get logged on.

I think I'll take my chances without the security option.

Bad Bad idea!!! Seriously at least inplement some of the security measures, its really not that bad and is a v.good idea.

You ought to do it with a cable through port 1 on the router tho, because you are locking down the Wireless side, hence if you screw up youll need the cable to "undo" what you did.

Start by changing the SSID name of the WLAN, then do it on the laptop (make the SSID invisible if there is an option too)....one step at a time :)

EDIT: Actually, the lappy will probably see the new one, however it might not..depends on several factors.

You're right Simon, I do need to get it sorted. I was so pee'd off with it last night that I was content to just leave it.

I have managed to get the cable working. All I had to do was click 'Local Area Connection'. Everyone is probably saying, 'of course', but it wasn't in the instructions and no-one said about it. That's how I managed to disable the security otherwise I would'nt be able to get back in the Management tool.

I will do a step at a time.

Cheers
