I had all photos etc. displayed in folders as thumbnails with the microsoft photo ed. For some reason the thumbnails are still there but are showing no image on them. The icon was changed too..changed the icon back but still no joy....its windows 98...any ideas anyone?

I could be wrong here :p (I've got XP now and it isn't the same) but isn't this to do with file associations?

IIRC when I had Win Me, you can right click on a file and 'associate' that file type (eg JPEG) with any program. Somewhere down the line the files have become associated with another program, so you need to associate them with MS Photo Editor again. I think you only have to do it to one file to apply it to all.

As I say, I could be compeltely wrong though

Doesn't seem to work on mine.
I can go to the explorer tool bar in a pic folder and click
View
Folder options
File types
Seem to have messed something up here but not sure what or why.
I remember years ago finding a file that could change thumbnail sizes etc...but cant remember where it was now....
Suppose I can try the original format disc to re load the photo ed???

well I tried the restore function from the compaq disc rather than the full re-format...still no joy though...........

What happens when you right click on a thumbnail? You should get a menu appear

Cheers Bernie, when I right click on thumbnail I get the drop down.....

open, quick view , scan with avg, send to, cut, copy, create shortcut, delete, rename, properties.
I used to get refresh thumbnail too, but this option has gone........

Now, this may be slightly different between XP and 98, but the principle will be the same, it will be similar.

Click on properties. You get a box come up. Under the 'general' tab it will say 'Type of file: JPEG Image' and under that it will say 'Opens with:' and then the name of a program. If it *doesn't* say MS Photo Editor, click on 'change' and select MS Photo Editor. Then check the box where it says 'always use this program for this type of file.'

If it already says MS Photo Editor, then, er, I dunno!

Thanks Bernie...doing this would only work for unlinked files on my machine. I can open the photos, its just that the thumbnails have no pic.
If I click as the 5th post in this thread...well the problem I guess is there somewhere.
If i knew what prog was reponsible for the thumbnail display i may be able to link it to photo ed?

When I click on 'file types' I have a number of pic extensions linked to photo ed.
image /jpeg - ext 1 opens with photo-ed
image /tiff - ext 20 opens with photo-ed
image /jpeg - ext jfif opens with explorer
image /jpeg - ext jpg opens with photo-ed
image /jpeg - ext jpeg jpe opens with photoed

I have inadvertantly cocked up the associations trying to get the thumb pics back...anybody?????
